Effexor - Weaning And Weigh Gain???!!

Updated

Anyone else have long term experience with Effexor? Under my doctor's supervision over the last three months I have been weaning off of Effexor (which I was on for 10+ years). Keeping up my same exercise and eating patterns I have actually GAINED nearly 10 lbs over the three months I have been weaning off. I'm now two weeks completely Effexor free and I weigh the highest I ever have in my life. My weight has bobbed between 150lbs and 190lbs (I'm only 5'3) since I've been on antidepressants (a good 20 years or so), so I don't honestly know if the RX's have really caused any weight gain for me (while I was still taking them regularly). I'm sure as I've aged (I'm 47 now), this has slowed weight loss attempts down b/c I gain more and more easily as the years march on and must work harder and harder. Anyone taken the Effexor long term then weaned off? Did you lose the weight? Did you gain at a higher rate while weaning off? Did THIS weight ever come off? Thanks for any stories you'd like to share.

I have also gained some weight with the effexor xr. Depression can have a profound impact on diet. most people lose weight. I have tapered off of it before - it has been a long time; i really can't remember any noticeable problems. i was only on a month or so usually. the longer you take it ...

so maybe you are eating more because you feel all better now! no, it might just be the norepinephrine. 20 years is a long time. i would ask your doc about this. or google - no harm.

I have lost and gained weight on many drugs; the worst are the mood stabilizers followed by antipsychotics. If I can lose weight on seroquel i believe there is plenty of hope for you. best wishes

Unfortunately, whenever a medication is prescribed, especially for long-term use, you have to seriously weight the possible benefits, against possible side effects. Since we are all different, there's no way to know how anyone will react to any given medication.

The FDA warns that Effexor most commonly causes weight loss as a side effect, but some people have also experienced weight gain, tapering off of it can also cause withdrawal effects that may include weight loss, or gain. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, and dry mouth.

How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?
