Drinking On Lexapro

Updated

I was just wondering if anyone has drank with this med and were there any side effects? I've been on lexapro 10 mg for a month and am feeling great but I am petrified to even attempt to drink alcohol, but would like to try. So if anyone could help that would be great.

I have been on Lexapro for 3 years. I drink about twice a week and everything seems to be fine. I have noticed that if you drink heavly for a few nights in a row you will feel a slight depression. Just don't over do it. I was worried at first also.

Lexapro is an antidepressant. Drinking alcohol is not recommended, as alcohol is a major depressant, and undoes the work the medication does.

Never do that! I was on that medicine for 2 years, and I was never able to drink! the first time I drank when I was on lexapro, was only 2 weeks from starting the treatment, I forgot I was on medication and I drank only 2 drinks and I fainted on a bar! Thanks to my sister nothing happened to me, but don't do it, it will get you sick big time! I kept on fainting for like 3 months, just because I kept forgetting I was taking the medicine (I'm ADD too). It feels horrible!

Combining alcohol with SSRI's can enhance the side effects, making you experience them more intently and experience more of them.

I've been on Lexapro for nearlyt 4 months and have always been quite a big social drinker and never noticed any thing different in regards to post drinking lows or getting intoxicated quicker. But in the past few months have noticed my desire for drinking lessen, not sure if there is a realtion to being on the drug...?? But my doctor said relatively safe to drink on this drug

I have only been on Lexapro for a couple weeks, and am very interested in this topic. The first few days on it, I felt GREAT! Then I started drinking not realizing it was a no-no. Now, I am feeling more blue.

The only problem is that I am not sure if it is psychosomatic or not. I think that I am going to try my best not to drink on it, just because I was so happy at first and I don't really the calories----beach wedding soon :-)

Honestly, your best bet is to just try it, don't like? Stop.

I have been on Lexapro for about 3 years and drink socially most weekends and have not had any problems. If anything it has given me the confidence to drink again without the worry of having a panic attack whilst out and about with my friends.
I do however try and stay away from having all night benders as I do seem to pull up VERY hungover and the medication seems to loose its effect which in some people cases may be dangerous.
My advice is to play it safe and whilst enjoying a social drink try and limit the intake of alcohol and you will give yourself the best chance of feeling 'normal' again.
Lexapro has also enabled me to get back into things like playing sport and camping in remote locations which was hard for me before taking the medication.

I was on 10-20mg of lexapro for almost three years, and I drank A LOT. Over time, I started to become angry, wanting to fight everyone when I was drunk, and I wasn't like that before. The combination probably isn't the best, unless you can drink a minimal amount of alcohol.

I am on 10mg. I drink every other day. And I have noticed sometimes my anxiety and panic attacks are pretty bad. But I sometimes have this weird feeling in my head. Anyone else get that? = (

I forgot and ordered a drink, and spent the next few hours vomiting, with a splitting migraine. So clearly I am one of those who cannot drink while on Lexapro.

I was lexapro for over two years and has been off for 5 months. I do drink occasionally but keep in mind that drinking one drink is like drinking 3 on lexapro. No doctor will tell you it is ok to drink while being on any medication. Just drink with caution. :)

I notice if I have a wine, I feel okay. If I have cocktails, I really feel moody and irritable the next day. I'm glad that I found this page. I feel like I'm losing it sometimes.

I am a heavy social drinker and noticed that i was much more aggressive and angry while drinking on lexapro. I was fine drinking on prozac which i was taking for seceral months but then my doc added lexapro to my perscription. one night I pissed myself, lost my phone, and showed up with no shirt on while drinking on it. probably not the best idea to drink on it.

On my fourth day of taking 5 mg of lexapro I had a few drinks with friends. I felt ok unil later that night, my heart started racing, my stomach hurt and I felt faint. I drank a lot of water and took a hot bath which helped me fall asleep. I'm now rethinking taking this medication.

I have been on Lexapro for about a week and last night I had a few beers and threw up violently which I’ve never done before from beer. Don’t know if it’s the med or not but sure wasn’t fun.

Re: Alice (# 6) Expand Referenced Message

I realized since being addicted to benzos, quitting and waiting for the real full effects from the lexapro that drinking can be tricky. The next morning if I over did it with hard alcohol at a party, I will have the WORST anxiety until about 2 o'-clock, and if you drink heavy with hard alcohol and you hit about a 6 out of ten on your drunk meter, u will act fine that night but you feel so s***ty and anxious the next day cause you don't remember anything past that point. Drinking heavy days in a row will give you feelings of depression. You can drink whenever but stay away from hard alcohol! Especially straight up, and stick to wine or beer and don't drink enough to were you say wow I drank a lot last night, the next morning cause then u feel s****y and depression creeps in...

I've been on Lexapro 5-10mg for 11 years. I've had many many drinks in that time and never any ill effects. I just know not to have too much alcohol at one time.

I have been on Lexapro for year and a half and as it has helped me I have packed on 20 lbs and that bothers me a lot. I started taking half of a five mg about five days a week two days on full five. I did feel nervous about drinking with it but I adjusted very well a few weekends.

I have been on this drug for 5 years, and have drank heavily during this time as well. Every time I self harmed, it was because of alcohol intoxication. A few drinks and my mind goes dark, thus the drinking continues. Then I wake up the next day soaked in my own blood. I have cut every part of my body at some point in time and required stitches at the hospital in the worst instances. But if I can manage to avoid alcohol, the self harming just goes away. I can go a few days without drinking lately, which is very good progress for me. Soon I'm turning 30 years old.

I can't believe alcohol is a legal drug. It's a plague.

A lot of time has passed since you posted this, but curious if the yawning went away? I'm on day two and feel slightly sluggish and have been yawning a lot, but def decreased anxiety... but I'm going to need to be a little more alert at work otherwise what's the point. Thanks!

I've been on Lexapro for 6 months, started out on 5mg and was increased to 10 mg after 4 months when I told my provider that I was drinking 2 drinks per day to cope with a failing marriage. At first lexapro lessened my desire to drink but that subsided after a few months. I drink almost every day 2-3 glasses of wine and the biggest thing I notice is having a hard time keeping track of how much I'm drinking. I go to pour another drink and am surprised I've already drank half a bottle at which point I stop so that I'm not hung over the next day. I also fall asleep much earlier than I use to. I didn't realize there were severe potential liver side effects until reading these posts. I'll talk to my provider about this when I go back. She definitely realized I drink regularly before prescribing lexapro.
