Doriden (Top voted first)

I used to take Doriden for bouts of insomnia but I heard it was discontinued. However, I asked my pharmacy about this and they said they would order it for me. Can it be ordered?

Doriden was my favorite, especially with codeine #4. It hasn't been manufactured worldwide since 2006. Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania used it. The pharmaceutical company who made it there was purchased by an Indian pharmaceutical company and they discontinued all of the medications that were not used much, all of the low sellers. I wish another company would start to make them again. They worked, unlike all of the sleep meds on the market today. Placidyl, Tuinal, Seconal, Nembutal, and of course Methaqualone. They don't make anything good these days. In the US all Glutethimide manufacturing was halted in '93.

Yes, it can be ordered, it wasn't discontinued, just basically replaced by medications that have been deemed safer, so it is rarely prescribed today.

Hello. I had been prescribed Doriden (generic glutethimide) for a number of years but was forced to switch to a benzodiazapine as I was told the manufacturer Ciba had conducted a worldwide product discontinuation due to poor sales. I did however read your post reply confirming a pharmacy could order this medication upon request? Was curious if you had any additional info or can confirm that Doriden is still available if requested? If not, perhaps the generic form glutethimide? Also, do you know if Doriden can be ordered by a Canadian pharmacy as I live in Toronto area? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello. Saw your post indicating possibility of obtaining Doriden through pharmacy order. Was this in reference to a U.S. pharmacy as I am north of the border. Following is my post re: glutethimide: Does anyone know where one could obtain glutethimide or it's brand name Doriden (CIBA Company)? Am in Canada where Doriden was discontinued in late 1980s and I was told Doriden discontinue was international. Perhaps there is now a generic form containing glutethimide available now as I would assume CIBA trademark rights would have by now expired. As the benzodiazapine replacement meds for Doriden are more addictive and dangerous (especially if mixing with alcohol & other drugs) it sure would be great to be able to go back to Doriden or glutethimide which were more effective and safer. A shame that the public was switched over to benzodiazipines (i.e. lorazapam, diazapam) when a better/safer product was available all in the name of profits and economics. Any help out there is most appreciated.

Doriden is no longer manufactured worldwide. Last countries that had it available was Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania. It was available up to 2006. It's an old, obsolete medication. But it worked well, especially with codeine.

Doriden (Glutethimide) has been discontinued by all manufacturers since '93. Several reasons why: it was highly abused (especially with codeine), it was an old medication that wasn't prescribed much, replaced by the benzodiazepine family of drugs. If it wasn't being prescribed legitimately very much there was no reason to keep manufacturing them. The FDA upon urging of the DEA made them a schedule 2 controlled substance (it was previously a scheduled 3).

There is a lot of restrictions on schedule 2 meds. Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania were still using Glutethimide until '06, when an Indian pharmaceutical company bought out the manufacturer Egis, or Terapia, I forget which, and they discontinued all of the low selling meds that they made, and Glutethimide was one of them. I think they were called Glutemide there, that was the brand name. There's some science as to why Glutethimide and codeine were a big abuse problem. Glutethimide is a liver enzyme induced that made the codeine, which turns into morphine in your body, much stronger.
