Does Nitrofurantoin Contain Any Sulfur?

My doctor (OBG) gave me nitrofurantoin monohydrate macrocrystals (100 caps) for a UTI. 3 days after completing my dose I got an allergic reaction with hives, etc. I went to my MP Dr. and she said I may be allergic to sulfur, but my OBG just told me there is no sulfur in this antibiotic. I am a little confused. So what am I allergic to?

Sorry to hear that you are having an allergic reaction to something in your medication. One thing I would like to point out is that people often confuse sulfa, sulfate, sulfur and sulfite. Sulfur is most commonly found in fertilizers and is unlikely in any medication that you are taking, however sulfa and sulfates are found in medication frequently. It is important when talking with medical professionals to know which of these they are talking about.
