Does Ichthammol Work?

Updated

I recently had either a spider bite or some type of staph-like boil come on my left side. It is extremely hard under the skin and I'm wondering if this ointment will do any good. Thanks to anyone who answers.

To Netty, thanks for the reply. I saw the dermatologist today and it definitely IS a spider bite! Got some of the cream, did the hot packs tonight (thanks for the suggestion), put the cream on and gauze. Will see what happens! THANKS!

I have multiple mosquito / spider bites that I got 6 weeks ago when on a camping trip. When I get them, they last 3 months. I was scratching them very hard. I tried alcohol, lemon juice, vinegar, preparation H (to reduce swelling), petersons ointment....anything I could get my hands on, but no relief. Went to the drug store and bought ichthammol ointment. I remember using this when I was a young girl for splinters and cuts. We called it "black salve". So far it's been 1 l/2 days of using it. I clean the bite areas, let dry and apply the salve on a bandaid. Do not rub in. I do this twice a day and the itching has stopped and the bites are getting better. I would definitely recommend!

Hello,

Based on my research, Ichthammol can be used to treat spider bites, by drawing out the poisonous venom. Check the area in about 12 hours. You should feel and see relief from the ointment. You can also try lavender essential oil. If anyone's interested, here's a link to a page that offers information about essential oils for insect bites: experience-essential-oils.com/insect-bites-treatment.html

I hope this helps!

All,

It works. But activated carbon works better for the soider bite. My suggestion is to use activated carbon for 12 hours or so (cleaned and reapplied every 3 hours), and ichthammol specially at night (because activated carbon will work for like 2-3 hours so when you sleep, for the majority of it, it won't work).

But for the first comment: I suggest against the warm compress. A spider bite should be kept cold not warm. So doing nothing is better than warming it.

Yeah, Itchamol works.

As a other poster said get one from a feed store. One big jar of it. I have an 16 oz of Itchamol jar and it helps me all the time. The little tube one goes fast and too expensive if you really think of it. As for the spider bite, I would ICE it first. Till you don't feel anything level I would. Then I would apply rubbing Alcohol. Dry it. Then I would put hydrogen peroxide. Dry it. Then Id put grob of triple antibiotic cream mix with grob of Itchamol. Cover it with gauze or if it's small baby spider bite then I would use band-aid for that matter. When you take shower take it off and redo same procedures again. But when you see infection spreading out to lager scale like getting bigger than 1/2 of your palm then it's time to check in with doctor. Get a shot for antibiotics. But if it's smaller than that above procedure works. Good luck. I know this because I get bit by Spiders all the time out in a fields and I have severe allergic reactions to it. But that's how I take care of this like once in a week. So ...???
