Doctors For Pain (austin Area)

Hi,

I have had chronic back pain for years and have seen various doctors for the problem. Most have prescribed either tramadol or hydrocodone along with muscles relaxers sometimes. I've also tried a round of steroids (prednisone) as well as non pharmaceutical options like physical therapy, stretching and light exercise when I can tolerate it in an effort to strengthen my core. Most of these treatments have helped to some degree but the pain inevitably returns (and really many of the medications have only slightly dulled the pain but I still have had difficulty getting through the day even when taking them. So my question is, are there any sympathetic docs in the Austin area (or north like Cedar Park or Leander) who are willing to prescribe stronger pain meds and muscle relaxers anymore? Seems so hard to find these days. I understand the laws and penalties are very stiff and why most doctors are hesitant to prescribe strong meds, but surely there has to be a good doctor out there who would be willing to help. The best relief I've ever had is oxycodone immediate release and soma for muscle spasms. I know if I say this to a doctor they will think I'm a drug seeker so any advice on how to approach this and which doctor I'd have the best luck with would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately I don't think you're going to be able to get a solid answer to your query. The rason for this is because the entire nation has shifted towards prescribing weaker and lower dosages of pain medication due to the strong crack down on drug prescriptions. This is due to the vast amount of reports of doctors over prescribing which leads to opiode addictions and potentially substance abuse.

Unfortunately the fear of over prescribing and being punished sometimes leads doctors to vastly under prescribe some patients who desperately need stronger medication. I feel terrible for people like you who are in constant pain but fall between the cracks due to medical professionals fear of losing their right to practice.

In the end it's boils down to you having two options, either work with the provider you currently have and see if you can convince them through tests and constant badgering or you can hop from doctor to doctor until you find the one that works best for you. My personal experience is that once a provider has under prescribed me that becomes the norm and I find better success starting with a new doctor who is willing to run new tests and make a new decision based upon the new evidence and their judgement on the situation.
