Disc Degeneration

Updated

What can be done about disc degeneration? The spine discs are rubbing together bone to bone and my head falls forward and down.

Hi Donna, so sorry to hear about what you're dealing with! Would it be possible to share any more details such as any treatments that you may have already had, what any doctors have told you so far, and if you've taken any medications for pain?

Re: Roy (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

I haven't been to a Dr. yet but what I know is from a chiropractor who has done an X-Ray. What I'm wanting to know is, can the cartilage between the discs be replaced?

Hi Donna, yes it can... I have had 3 levels fused in my neck and 4 levels fused in my lower back. You will need to see an orthopedic surgeon and he will order an MRI... you can then decide on the treatment. Good luck to you!!

Well I have heard that up to 3 discs can be replaced, not sure of many details..... or of side effects or success rates..... I was told my back has too many bad discs for this procedure a few years ago...... have your neurosurgeon look @ your mri and get an opinion; a couple would be better. Hope it works out 4 ya.

Well, if the surgical route is something that you are considering then there is such a thing as artificial disc replacement. Found a pretty decent explanation at spine.org. But it does sound pretty involved and you'd have to work with a doctor to ensure that the benefits outweigh the risk and recovery time. What has your chiropractor said? Did they recommend meeting with someone re: surger? I know that sometimes chiropractic care can go a long way to help with things in the long run depending on the nature of your issues.
