Disappearance Of 12mg Chlor-trimeton.... Again (Top voted first)

Updated

Question! Where can I find Chlor-Trimeton 12hr 12mg allergy pills? (near San Diego, CA) It seems that whenever a new allergy medicine comes on the market (Claritin, Zyrtec), CT disappears for a year or so. Available in Canada as Chlor-Tripolon but only for a short while as everyone in the US starts buying it on-line when CT disappears. This time, I haven't noticed any new product roll-out. Question 2- WHY does it disappear? I've been taking it regularly for over 50 years and only recently (last few years) has it been doing this disappearing act.

Does anyone else' doctor look at them like they are crazy when they say that NONE of the over the counters work as well as Chlortrimeton? I know mine does. I've taken it for probably 50 years and it is the only thing that works. I've tried everything else it works for maybe 5 hours even though it says 12 hours.

In the news, I read that there is a link between "old school" antihistamines and Alzheimer's. Clortrimeton is considered an "old school" antihistamine. Thus, I limit my usage of the product now, but I still take it (4 mg sold at Walmart).

My doctor has recommended that I switch to the "new school" antihistamines such as Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra. I have not had good success with these drugs.

I wanted to let all of you know, who are looking for Chlor-Trimeton 12 Hour, that the brand had reentered the market in the spring of 2010 but then had a recall in Nov. 2010, although KVK-Tech, a pharmaceutical manufacturer located in Pennsylvania, had launched their FDA approved equivalent, Chlorpheniramine Maleate Extended Release 12 mg under the new trademarked name, Chlorphen-12. Our site will be up and running within a week at www.chlorphen12.com. You can find our product at many pharmacies or at drugstore.com or amazon.com. You can always ask your pharmacist to order Chlorphen-12 for you because it is available at all the suppliers to drug stores around the country. I hope this helps. NDC #s are 10702-0017-24 or 10702-0017-06

Just spoke with customer relations at the Merck website. It is apparently a "low-volume product" so they only manufacture it in periodic batches. The recall from November pretty much depleted all the product from the last batch and there is no set date for when they are going to be making another. I think next time I see it in stores I'll stock up with 3 or 4 boxes to maintain a reserve since it's the only stuff that works for me.

I'm frustrated too. I've tried many antihistamines & for years Chlor-Trimeton 12 hr. works best for me. Was glad when it returned to the stores last yr. Now it is gone AGAIN! Don't want to have to remember to take the 4 hr. version thru the day. I did just receive my order of Chlorphen - 12 hr from Amazon online. Can get a 60 ct. bottle for $15.99 + shipping. Provider is American Wholesaler. I hope it works as well as Chlor-Trimeton.......I'm also going to Check with my local hometown pharmacy to see if they can get it.

Same I've used Chlortrimeton for years and years like 30 years or more and not it's just gone. None of the other allergy meds work as well for me... Not even Benedryl. They should bring it back to the shelves.

I just noticed Allegra became OTC(over the counter). Chlor-Trimeton always disappears when a new allergy product is introduced. The same thing happened when both Claritin and Zyrtec became OTC. I wonder if the same company owns them and takes CT off the market to generate sales for the new product.

Hello Phil- Did you see my reply below on April 15 where I mention where you can get Chlorpheniramine Maleate Extended Release 12 mg? If you only want to buy it locally, just ask your pharmacist to look up these NDC #s and they can order it from their wholesaler NDC #s are 10702-0017-24 (24 count box) or 10702-0017-06 (60 count bottle). Chlorphen-12 is the only FDA approved Chlorpheniramine Maleate ER 12 mg available in the US right now. Good luck...

Chlor-Trimeton had recall problems. I don't trust it. But I need a solution for my horrible allergies to pollen. I use Chlorphen-12 now. I checked with my pharmacist and he told me that it is the FDA therapeutic equivalent to Chlor-Trimeton. He told me to just think that Chlor-Trimeton is now Chlorphen-12. I just order it on Amazon...works like a charm.

I second Phils question. Chlor-Trimeton 12hr is very good for me. Why does it keep disappearing here in Michigan too!

Thank you, Lori
The mailman just delivered 2 60 ct. bottles of Chlorphen-12, bought through Amazon.com. I guess I'm just not used to searching/buying on-line and did not even think to look until I saw your posts.
Once again, THANKS!!

Chlortrimeton 4 mg and 12 mg have been discontinued as of December, 2015. I called Bayer, who now owns Chlortrimeton, to find out why it is missing from shelves and on-line. The told me both dosages have been permanently discontinued for "business reasons." So, it's permanently gone forever. To bad. Like many others, this was the only allergy relief for my wife - and I think we've tried them all.

I've been buying Chlorphen-12 from Amazon and it is still available, but the price has gone up $14.00 since December and is now $49.99 for 120 pills. It's also available on eBay, but the price is even higher. I'm wondering if the supply is just getting scarce or if it is about to be discontinued. I agree with many others that none of the newer allergy pills - zyrtec, allegra, claritin, xyzal - control my cough at all. Only chlorpheniramine does the trick. {affiliate link added}

Re: Liba (# 64) Expand Referenced Message

I have purchase Chlor-tripolon 4mg for years in Canada now I have been told when ask at the drug store that they have not received product its on back order and on line it says the product has been cancelled I have used it for years for food allergies. and anything that has too much sulfites in it that can cause me breakout in a rash I keep it in my purse with me at all times. I guess us as consumers are now screwed to be able to purchase what works best for us.

A correction to my reply to Verwon.
Yes, alternatives are "freely available"(4mg) but my discussion thread was for 12mg/time release ONLY

Hi Holly
I got 2 60ct.bottles of Chlorphen-12 from American Wholesaler in May for $23.98. ($10 a bottle plus shipping)
I had hoped the price would stay the same since that was a lot lower than what I could be paying for Chlor-Trimeton. I don't like the idea of a $5.99 price hike but it's still a little lower and more importantly, I guess, is the simple fact that it is available. (I agree with your comment about the 4mg).

Did the Chlorophen-12 work for you as well as Chlor-Trimeton? I bought 12 boxes the last time I saw it, and jut used the last one last night. I know it expired 01/12 but what's a month or two when it works?

I just bought Chlorphen-12 online and it works just as well as Chlortrimeton 12mg used to. I went on the manufacturers website and found a coupon. Free shipping too! [chlorphen12.com/coupon]

Re: Madelyn (# 46) Expand Referenced Message

yes, it is now discontinued at all Walmart stores. I, too, had to go to Amazon. I have also used it for at least 40 years.
