Diphen Atropine Tab

Updated

My doctor refused to refill this Rx for diphen atropine for 6 weeks. I have been taking this med for about 6-7 years now. It is the ONLY med that lets me lead a normal life without explosive diarrhea. If I don't take it, and I have to have a bowel movement, I have about 2 minutes to find a restroom. I usually don't make it and that is a mess. No warning at all. He finally renewed my prescription but wants me to have an Upper GI. How long can you take diphen atropine? Does it CAUSE intestinal problems to make an upper GI necessary? Please help me. Thank you. I have been diagnosed with IBS for about 16 years now.

Diphenoxylate with Atropine is normally used to treat severe cases of diarrhea.

The problem that arises from such prolonged use of it is that your body becomes dependent on it to regulate itself. That is probably what your doctor is worried about and why he wants you to stop taking it.

When you've been on it for so long, yes, you will get explosive diarrhea, when you suddenly stop taking it and as long as you continue to take it, there is no way to know if your body still has this problem or if it's just from the medication.

This explains why your doctor wants you to have the upper GI, he wants to see if there is something that will still cause you to have the severe diarrhea or if it is just the rebound effects of the medication.

It can be a problem, with IBS, but is not usually a constant issue for most people.

I have taken it for Lymphocytic Colitis (and still am -to finish the RX). Very useful. I suggest, however, that you see a Digestive Disease MD for a diagnosis and treatment.

Have you been tested for celiac disease (inability to digest gluten)? The blood test very often results in a false negative (regardless of what your doctor says), so unless you had a biopsy, you don't know for certain. I would highly recommend that you try a gluten free diet for at least 3 months. Also, any type of dairy causes inflammation throughout the body, and meat causes rotting in the intestine (reference the China Study) . If your diet is even remotely similar to that of the average American, your diet HAS to change quite dramatically if you truly want improved health. And yes, it takes work, but its entirely doable. Unfortunately, most in this country would rather take a pill to treat symptoms rather than alter what is put in their mouth. Best of luck to you.

Can I still use diphen/atropine dated 10/25/15? Do I need a new prescription or can I still use what I have?
