Hi Elaine,

As far as comparing these drugs, I think it's not wise to assume that they have similar properties, since everyone can react differently to one or the other, despite having an equivalent dosage.

If you're used to taking one or the other and have your doctors permission, I'd say it's fine to switch off between the two. However, at the same time I wouldn't necessarily anticipate having the same relief or results from two entirely different medications.

On a side note: Eating whole foods that have little to no sodium and which are high in potassium and magnesium are solid dietary options for lowering blood pressure. These foods primarily include fresh fruits and vegetables; bananas and dates in particular are great for this, among many others!

I hope this helps!

Diovan only contains the active ingredient Valsartan.

Learn more Diovan details here.

But the other medication you mentioned contains Losartan and Hydrochlorothiazide, which is a diuretic.

Learn more Losartan details here.

Learn more Hydrochlorothiazide details here.

So no, they are not the same and not interchangeable.

Have you talked to your doctor about what to do if you run out?

Here is an equivalency chart I found. My dr. switched me from 320 mg Diovan to 100 mg Losartan, which is consistent with the chart.

I am currently on Diovan 160 and because of Ins I have been switched to Losartin Potassium 50 mg. I haven't started the Losartin yet only because of concerns of side effects...are the 2 similar enough where I shouldn't feel much of a change?

I am out of my Losartan Potassium 100mg and though I paid extra for 2 day delivery a week ago for my mail order script, it has not arrived. My dad was taken off Diovan this week by his Dr. Is it better for me to miss a day or 2 of HBP medication or take 160 mg of Diovan while I wait. I was previously on Diovan and it was changed due to expense of Diovan.

The first time I took Losartan nothing happened. More recently, I had to take it again as Valsartan has been unavailable in the UK. This time my BP went up! Now back on Valsartan and everything is looking good. However, whatever you do avoid Candesartan which in just 4 days gave me pains in my thighs and back which have still not stopped after 4 weeks. It also increased my tinnitus.

May I also suggest you vote for a health service? In the UK Valsartan [Diovan] is available as a generic and costs $3.60 per 28 capsules from ACTAVIS!!!!!! I get FREE prescriptions because of age which if younger would cost $13 each item.

I was on Diovan and was able to come off blood pressure meds completely. After 7 months my pressure became unstable and had to go back to meds. This time the generic brand was issued and it caused side effects I did not have with the brand name. When I compare the pills, everything about them is the same. Is this correct? How do I know what I'm really getting?

I have been switched from Diovan to Losartan Potassium, and I am concerned about whether the Losartan Potassium will cause too much Potassium in my body or if both meds have the same amount of Potassium in them.

I have had many awful side effects from valsartan.
Stomach pains, loose stools almost not being able to reach the bathroom...
A couple of days after going off it I got a horrible flu. Sinus, low grade fever, sore throat, cough, aches all over, nausea... Still sick after 8 days and I had not had the flu since I was a teen 27 years ago.
Stay away from this medication it's dangerous. Valsartan 80mg.

The generic and brand names are NOT exactly the same. They are supposed to have the same active ingredient, but the generic has different inactive ingredients and is manufactured in a different country. Do a Google search for ingredients of the drug name and you can see the list of colors, fillers, etc, and compare for yourself.

I'm taking 320 mg daily. I've cut pill, but I'm still always exhausted. I'm 81years old. Doc doesn't want any changes made. I also take 5 mg of norvasc. Am I doomed to live the life of a wilted veggie?

I've only used Diovan, but it works well at 320 mg, plus 5mg of Norvasc, which I cut in half. If I don't I'm a walking zombie. I have drug resistant, very high bp. These drugs have worked a miracle. Happy Mother's Day, and best wishes for good health!
