Diacerein Side Effects

Updated

Can a patient suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney malfunction (creatine 3.2, urea 105, potassium 4.7) with knee problems take diacerein (100gm) daily? if not, what is the alternative? Is it necessary to avoid taking diacerein when suffering from kidney malfunction? Kindly advise.

Diacerein can be used by people with kidney problems that have decreased function, but your doctor does have to carefully consider the dosage. Normally they should only prescribe half the amount that they would for people that don't have kidney problems.

Decreased kidney function causes the drug to reach higher plasma concentrations in the body and to be processed out much slower.

Has your doctor prescribed this and is that same doctor aware of your kidney problem?

Gothai, have you had treatment for the Gastritis?

Usually, it's a few months of taking some type of antacid and watching what you eat and drink, to allow the stomach to heal.

I also had it and, after using Pepcid for several months, it has mostly healed up and I rarely have any issues with it. There is really no reason that it should be continuing for years and causing you problems, unless there is some other underlying condition causing it.

And as to using the Diacerein with it, I am not sure. Have you tried asking your doctor? this site doesn't actually have a lot of information on it.

Well, as discussed above a patient may use Diacerein if he is having ulcers or bleeding with NSAIDs. Diacerein is the only drug which can regenerate your cartilage but it is also associated with some sorts of gastric problem like diarrhea and stomach pain. But a beautiful thing about Diacerein is that its pain releiving effects last upto 4 weeks after its discontinuation which provides flexibility of skipping doses for one week or so if you are having side effects. Please also note that diacerein takes 4 weeks to provide full control of the disease. Diacerein is relatively a new drug in market so its all (unpredictable) side effects are not known yet. One of its newly discovered side effect is its hypoglycemic effect. It increases Insulin secretion in the same dose as given to osteoarthritis patients. In response to the first question, a diabetes patient can take (with added benefit of insulin secretion) diacerein but its dose should be optimized by your pharmacist.

Diacereine in my case has been 100% positive to relieve all my symptoms of osteoarthritis during the last 10 years, where all other drugs failed.
I am 82 now, fully active with no pain or limits, taking 2 pills daily.
