Dextroamp Amphet Vs. Adderall - Why Would The "generic" Not Be Covered By An Insurance Company?

Updated

My 23-yr old daughter has been on Adderall for eight years, with the prescription covered all that time by the same insurance/HMO provider. This month, her doctor (or perhaps the pharmacist) switched her to a new "generic" for Adderall - "Dextroamp Amphet" - and the insurance provider has written us to say they won't cover it. Seriously? A generic alternative that (I can only assume) is intended to save everyone money, and the insurance provider WON'T cover it? What am I not understanding here?

Some insurance companies are reluctant to cover generics and, in many cases, it has to do with quality concerns.

The FDA does allow generics to differ from the name brands by as much as plus or minus 20%, in the active ingredient. They consider this an effecitive and safe therapeutic window.

However, for some people, even what is considered a minor fluctuation can cause them problems, especially if they are sensitive to medications. This has caused some problems, in some instances, such as someone experiencing increasing side effects or discovering that a medication they have been taking for years is no longer working for them.

When these concerns have arisen, some insurance companies choose not to cover the generic medications, until they have been available for a prolonged period of time and have been proven to be just as effective as the name brands.

You’re definitely 1 of the lucky ones. The genetics are absolute garbage and my Medicaid won’t approve the name brands. So trust me when I and millions of others tell you that you’re lucky.

Re: Cautious Customer (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

Go to the manufacturers website and click on Prescribing Information. The ingredients are there. There is a lot of other detailed information too. So you have to look for it

That's not true about generics allowed to be off by as much as 20%. It's an urban myth that everyone believes. If this was true people would be dying. They make generic chemotherapy and aids meds, as well as antibiotics and life saving meds. There is no truth to it. The Waxman Act just guarantees a source for cheap generics. I know everyone is going to say that I am wrong, but just think about what something like that can do. People would literally be dying all over the place. All types of medicine are manufactured generically once the brand name patent expires. Believe what you will, but I speak the truth.
