Wendy Says:

I am exceedingly pill-sensitive. Nothing works for me like the old Dexedrine by Smth, Kline, Glaxoc. Is there any place in the world to obtain and fill a prescription for it?

Hello, Wendy! How are you?

It is still available in the U.S., but you may need your doctor to write a prescription as 'brand medically necessary' and to have a pharmacy order it in for you.

The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, mood swings and anorexia.

Has someone told you that it isn't available?

I was told the same - my pharmacist tried to order more as I was picking up my prescription last week 'suspended indefinitely' ... I'm also extremely 'pill senstive' - I've tried a million different things....

The name brand for dexedrine was made for years by Barr and I was able to take their generic, Teva, without problem. I need it for severe ADHD, but also for energy and now that they sold the script to a US company, I tried several brands and they are not working. I can not get out of bed and function. Plus, I was on a dose of 100 mg. for 17 years and now Blue Cross only allows 60 mg, which is suboptimal for me. I need my lifeback. Any suggestions for what else might work?

Ok, here's the deal. Teva sold Barr ER Dexedrine to Mayne Manufacturer. This deal just went down recently. Formularly seems to have been modified, not the same effect from the drug. A shame.

Barr Labs is owned by Teva and they just bought Actavis, which makes a generic dexedrine anyhow so it is no loss to Teva.

Wendy Says:

I suspect the problem is that Barr/TEVA is made in Israel, while many of the generics are made in the US, although Mayne is from Australia. This may explain why the generics are not working... different fill or processing method, etc.

So, what is the next best alternative medication. Did not like Ritalin or Adderall. .

Wendy,

Your correct they use substandard binding formulations since the quality or lack there of in these foreign entities are suspect to say the least. I was going to suggest adderal as an option but since that wasn't effective I fear your options are quite limited. I wish there was something else I could reccomend for you

Yes, my mail in pharmacy told me it was on longer available. I checked on the internet and saw that the FDA filed a Sherman Act Suit against TEVA and required TEVA to sell some its generic medication to two different companies. (I suspect it was politically motivated as this was done when Obama was taking a stance on Israeli polices against the Palestinians and I never hear about the govt enforcing monopoly laws against anyone but Microsoft).

I used to take the 6-7 spanules in the morning and 1 or 2 dexostat tabs as boosters to prevent crashing. I looked into getting a dexostat script and they do not make spanules in the US.. they make spanules and sell them elsewhere, but not in the US.

I have just tried Mallinckrodt. I have tried Actavis (the worst), Mayne, and Amedra, which my pharmacy treats as the name brand. Amedra was the best, but not at the limited dose I have been restricted too. I have not tried Mylan or KV.

No relief in sight.

Re: Wendy (# 10)

I have been on dextroamphetamine sulfate since the year 1997. Since GSK stopped making Dexedrine 5 mg E-19 orange hearts and Dexedrine Spansules during 2009/2010, I switched to Adderall I/R (mixed 4 amphetamine salts) but, by 1st quarter of 2014, my insurance removed, Adderall Instant Release from the Insurance formulary, I took my formulary book to my Psychiatrist of now 17 years, and he wrote me a prescription for Dextroamphetamine Sulfate 10 mg I/R. I chose Rite Aid Pharmacy Chain in USA, and, requested, "Mallinckrodt pharmaceutical generic a mfg out of St Louis Missouri and, I have been very pleased with my 3 x 10 mg per day! (It is on my formulary for Medicare, Medigap private insurance, as well. P.S. I stay well informed, belong to several national Adult with ADD interaction groups and attend national conventions, next one Atlanta GA Nov 2017 ADDA + CHaaD combined this time. Note: many, many people do not like some of the choice of generic "other" dextroamphetamine sulfate, on the market, "in the here and now" I was very disappointed in Teva Group (Barr or Actavis) generic versions, especially, the Wilshire Pharmaceuticals of Atlanta Ga version and the AuroBindo version of the formulation! Just my 2 cents worth. I am strictly talking about only the years mid year 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017. In the past, doesn't matter now, but the super high quality of 1937 patented SKF later Smith Kline Beecham, later Glaxo Smith Kline, was, my gold standard for both I/R and E/R now long gone worldwide. "in terms of 100% pure dextroamphetamine" The Dex Spansule were patented in 1952 for the tapered end 5mg, 10mg 15 mg ER. Amedra, is the parent firm who bought the patent from GSK but there is some confusion and lack of availability, due to either the much higher price increases, like outrageous price increases, and, brand name is not on my formulary so I never tried to special order, or shop for who carries Amedra, who allegedly contracts out another ethical pharma firm to actually make the pills. A very common practice, as GSK did this, for most of the last ten years, they produced the legendary brand name.

Re: Scott (# 13)

Hi Scott, I have posted earlier on this thread, "Sept 02, 2017" thus I will try to NOT repeat my wall of text. Since the year 1994, yes, I have "tapered down slowly, for personal reasons, and it was not easy, but I went gradually down to ""zero" use and was only able in nearly 24 years about 4 times in this time to "do without" for 1999 3 days (while on a vacation in paradise) "Maui Hawaiian Islands USA" 2006 15 days (while my RN wife same year filed for Divorce) and SHE told me "you better start taking your ADHD meds, because #1 I am still Divorcing you but, you are a "vegetable for 15 days, you are agoraphobic, and/or "lazy" and or "scattered" and resign your job and lay in bed for days (15 days) and you cannot survive without the use of your C-II USA stimulants"

This very same thing happened in Maui 7 years earlier, for 3 days in a row, I had no energy to leave hotel room, plenty of money, just amotivational syndrome...??? I start taking my Dexedrine 5 mg and or Adderall both brand name in 1999 and I make my spouse happy and I get "focused" from day number 1!

2013 - I taper down "slowly" from 50 mg of combo Dexedrine Spansule GSK or Barr Labs (Teva) Sellersville, PA 15 mg generic dexedrine ER capsules + booster Adderall Instant Release, years of use of "Brand Name" no problem, later, from, Richwood (brand) to ShireUS (brand) later Barr Labs (generic) later Dec 2008+ Teva, who bought out Barr, A-OK. But, I reduce dose from 50 to 30 to either 15 mg ER or just one 10 mg generic Adderall, then "Zero" use again for 15 days in a row, I live now alone, and, Immensely "struggled to just to function as a independent adult", bathe, eat, clean house just "no energy, listless, amotivational syndrome, scattered, frankly, just "depressed" no difference day 1 vs day 14 or day 15. I have the meds in my nice home, and, when I start back...."I feel instant relief, to just take a simple walk "outside my home, wash dishes, clean house, pay bills, etc"

2018 - My Psychiatrist, wants me now to "not take more than 5 mg to 7.5 mg of "dextroamphetamine sulfate instant release" he does not care what mfg I use, he is 73 years old and I have just past age 65 years old he "throws up his hands", and, says, "you decrease the meds, very good job!! Why can't you STAY OFF the stimulants, (Ritalin, or Dexedrine, or, Adderall, etc etc.) "he does not understand why I decrease dose but, cannot function for 15 days or "why not try 30 days or 1 year"???

2018 - Thus I take a small dose, not enough, 5 mg or 7.5 mg. (with a 24 year history, same MD for 19 years in a row, I have extra bottles of Adderall and/or Dexedrine brand name, from years 2005 to 2009. I now self-medicate, to co-exist, but, eventually I will run out, yes, I have about a 6 months supply. @ 15mg max 20 mg of either Mallinckrodt or the FDA Orange Book AA rated Dexedrine Spansules (once made by GSK) or Adderall brand name (once made by ShireUS/Richwood).

I am not a "good example" I am a different breed of cat, as I have seen major changes in the stimulant market the past 7 years "it is all downhill" IMHO. Many people in USA are frustrated, who have ADD or ADHD or Narcolepsy, as IMHO the quality of most C-II stimulants has gone downhill. "The prices have increased outrageously, and the quality has gone down"

Thank you "Anonymous" post #3, Nov 28, 2016, also, Wendy post #4, Nov 24, 2016, and Scott post #13, March 23 2018.

I have chemist social friends, "me" Msc in alcohol and drug intervention and I "do not have the answers either"??? I do know that the "quality of the ER form of dextroamphetamine can be very expensive to mfg correctly most pharma firms do not care, (cheap fillers/binders to cut cost) vs Greed.

IMHO the Adderall product was abused by a minority of people, like 16 to 24 yr old "non ADD" people IMHO stigma is attached again too many stimulants, problem no 1, the quality is mostly not there for 2016+ and TEVA is in serious trouble, believe, me, lost 14 BILLION dollars in past calender year. Big time layoff, upper VIP's quit. etc, big problem, etc....

IDK anymore about newer mfg such as mentioned in this thread the past 24 months+ never tried "Gavis" or, Mayne, or any newer products of either generic Adderall or generic dextroamphetamine,

My MD told me 5 years ago I quote him, "the pharmacy industry that makes these stimulants, they do not care about quality of product, the DEA thinks (It is funny) for real ADD ADHD patients who suffer, they also do not care, only the VERY RICH PERSON can get high quality, Rx such as "Dexedrine brand dispense as written, for like $1,000.00 for 90 or 100 tablets/capsules"
USA dollars.

So what do you do if you are not a millionaire? IDK. I do not drink alcohol for many many years quit Nicotine back in the year 1983! I do not have the answers...the ADDA convention attendance and CHADD conventions attendance has "dropped over 50% to 70% and the annual conventions are now combined, compared to 1995 to 1998 when I go to Convention Wash DC or Orlando FL or Atlanta Ga, it is "scary" believe me.

Sorry for my wall of text, I use a 17 inch laptop, no Smartphone: I am not a rich man, just a aging divorced male who lives alone, going to support groups vs church is still not enough...???

Thanks for the responses. I am still miserable. Activis was worthless. Did not like Mayne. I take Mallinkcroft, but it is also not as good as the Barr brand. Now I am wondering if I need to try to switch meds because I can not find a decent brand, or try taking short release dexestat, which I used to use along with the dexedrine to prevent rebound in the evening. In the meanwhile, I have developed a circidian rhythme disorder and sleep all day and am up all night. Anyone having that problem?

Re: Wendy (# 15)

IMHO "do not accept the generic" for former "DextroStat" now by KVK Tech Inc pink tabs embossed "K 66" These are the poorest performing dextroamphetamine sulfate instant release I have ever had in my life!!! Walgreen's in my state replaced Mallinckrodt 10 mg tabs for this "generic" by KVK Tech and will not special order the Mallies, a much higher quality. IMHO.

P.S may be also substituted for brand Zenzedi, as printed on my prescription bottle. I still miss the GSK/ SK Beecham / SKF Dexedrine (I/R) or Spansules, and, the former Richwood/ShireUS DextroStat. (No longer manufactured) not had one since the year 2009. For like 20 yrs they were only like US one dollar each (Dexedrine Spansule 15 mg) the price INCREASED the last 3 yrs Dexedrine and DextroStat were made as Brand original formula......very frustrating in the here and now........it was made.

Re: Ridgerunner007 (# 14)

The price has jumped again. They (usually Teva) release a generic for $50.00 and the "brand name" jumps from $800 to over $2,000.00 . That is their strategy. I will pay for real spansules out of pocket however the FDA thinks that extra release is safer for me. The issue is not about the money, they are just very sick individuals.

I feel like there might be a reproduction issue. dexedrine is probably not the easiest of things to copy. I remember when remeron came onto the scene; there were like 7 attempts to go from model chemical to bulk production and even the FDA said NO WAY!

yes I agree quality and consistency are being sacrificed.
