Dexedrine 15 Mg Caps (taking 3x 5mg)

Why can't I get 15 mg dexedrine in Edmonton, Canada? Taking equiv. 5mg tabs are screwing up my days/nights.

My pharmacist told me that Barr just stopped manufacturing Dexedrine. I take 10mg spansules. I live in Illinois. I can't find more info. I was given Actavis generic. They have written on label that "manufacturer is different but is exact same medicine". I dont agree there isn't a difference, and I hope there is an improvement or better choice. I actually did better with Barr generic than brand, but that's just me. But this new generic is disappointing for me. I still have some Barr left so I can very clearly feel the difference in manufacturer.

I shall do my best to summarize, Smith Kline (USA) were the gold standard for either Instant Release Dexedrine Sulfate orange hearts embossed E-19 from 1937 until 2009, (Discontinued). Dexedrine Spansules were the gold standard for ER forms from 1952 until the end of 2010 (discontinued) the ADD/ADHD NARCOLEPSY industry has been in chaos in the past 6 years in the USA. Adderall, a effective advertising gimmick, was effective for 15+ years borrowed from OBETROL, a 1965 stimulant, by Obetrol Pharma., Brooklyn NY, then to Richwood Pharma (1994) then to Shire US, (2007) then to Barr Pharma as a "USA Generic" 1997 to the 2015, in both, Adderall I/R and Dexedrine Capsules ER from 2007, until recently in 2015. Barr, was obtained by Teva in Dec of 2008, with no general complaints in potentcy. NOTE: Adderall in both forms is not 100% d-amphetamine, but 4 mixed amphetamine salts. The extreme controversy in the USA, and Canada, and the UK , is Smith Kline, dumping the patent, to various unknown pharmaceutical firms in 2009/2010 worldwide. Note: Smith Kline always held no a position as a AA class of Instant Release Dexedrine "AA" for decades.

Since 2009, RANBAXY of India, and, Core Pharma of the USA has had many complaints on multiple forums of harm reduction chat rooms. OFFICIALLY, AS OF 2015, Three (3) pharma firms manufacture pure d-amphetamine in the USA, Amedra, has Core Pharma, under agreement, with Glaxo Smith Kline to mfg the brand name Dexedrine tabs and Spansules (USA) by agreement since Oct 22, of 2010. Three (3) USA generics are now available as I/R Generic d-amphetamine (5mg. and 10 mg) (Barr/Teva, (Sellersville, PA), Wilshire Pharma, Atlanta, Ga, & Amedra/Core Pharma,. THE PRICE OF DEXEDRINE ER BOTH GENERIC AND I/R had risen radically in the USA since 2008. In Canada, Paladin Pharma has exclusive rights from Smith Kline to market Dexedrine, and, in the UK, Glaxo Smith Kline sold patent rights to FLYNN pharma, and, to UCB Pharma + United Drug, as "orphan drugs" not on the NHS system. NOTE: briefly in the USA, Ethex Pharma manufactured Dexedrine 5mg and 10 mg instant release, but the USA DEA FDA shut them down for producing d-amphetamine in too potent a formulation. Also, RANBAXY of India were given heavy fines for manufacturing generic Adderall, under inconsistent and many other violations within the USA. I have documentation where both Dexedrine Spansules Brand name, and, price has increased, 350%, since 2008. source REDBOOK Pharmacy's fundamental reference 114th edt. Dexedrine 5 mg is also available in Australia, under "orphan drug status" and requires a special order from a compounding Apothecary.

Hey I know exactly how you feel I'm subscribed 45 milligrams of dexedrine a day for years I took 3 15 milligrams spansules then a pharmacy I was dealing with few months ago told me they stopped making them and they switched me to the 5 milligram instant release tablets horrible they would not work the same they made me anxious leave me cranky and just awful I've been having trouble getting back my 15 milligram prescription I switch pharmacies to one that says they're not on backorder anymore but now my shrink is too busy to write me the triplicate prescription againcuz according to him its exactly the same med I am at my wits end and have started self medicating with illegal drugs again this is what the medical community does

The 15mg capsules were shorted from the manufacturer for a little while. I believe they are back in stock now. I work in a pharmacy in Edmonton and we have the 5mg tablets, 10mg & 15mg capsules.

So did they actually stop making the spansules for a while is that why they were on backorder at first pharmacy?if so why did they stop/start again - because people complained? Sorry if this was already answered above I'm just worried it will happen again and so far dex spansules are The Only ADHD med that work for me and keep me from self medicating (which I did on and off for most of my adult life as I didn't get diagnosed until 2010; I'm 40 now...)I guess my current pharmacy just had a supply of them then Cuz not that many people are prescribed them? Its a smaller pharmacy..

Dexedrine changed manufacturers I believe that's why there was a short. I know for certain the 5mg tablet is now made by paladin. Which I believe is manufactured in Ontario. A lot of the time when we have shorts in drugs it's because of the manufacturer changing packaging, appearance of medication, or switching to who makes it now. Also sometimes the drug supply simply can't make the demand so they run short. The majority of rxs I see are for 10 and 15mg capsules so I should hope they don't stop making those for people. There is no none generic of Dexedrine that I'm aware of yet. So when it runs short that is a huge deal for patients on it. We had Ritalin SR run short for a few months and that wasn't a good time because there is no generic SR either. Hope this helps.

I made a type on manufacturing dates reference the USA firm Teva (formerly Barr Pharmaceuticals of Sellersville PA) has manufactured a "generic" version of the tradename SKF/SKB/GSK "Dexedrine Spansule" .......Teva calls "Dextroamphetamine Capsules" due to trademark copy right protection, since around 2007 to 2015. (not as I earlier stated from 1997 to 2015...that Is incorrect)

It is tricky business, because I am trying to stay on the same subject, which I believe is to discuss just pure 100% forms available in the USA of dextroamphetamine. Not to be confused with a 1st cousin, also made by Teva/Barr along a similar time frame, which is the generic version of Obetrol, (1965 to 1994) which became "Adderall" with mixed amphetamine salts, (1994 to around about the end of the year 2010) in brand name only, yet, continues to this very day to be manufactured by multiple manufacturers in the USA including Teva/Barr as "Generic Adderall" tablets. I am reasonably sure that brand name Adderall tablets patent has expired, with ShireUS, and with Teva/Barr, thus is only made I/R as a tablet in mixed salts, also, (to further confuse,..I do not mean to.....Adderall XR is a totally different formulation, I will not comment any further on that stimulant.

As far as I know, the only USA Extended Release Capsule, in a generic form, that is available, still, is the Barr 5mg, 10mg, 15mg Capsule, that, became Teva in December of 2008. Latest National Drug Codes for USA customers are:

00555-0954-02 for Dextroamphetamine Capsules ER in 5mg............................
00555-0955-02 for Dextroamphetamine Capsules ER in 10mg.......................
00555-0956-02 for Dextroamphetamine Capsules ER in 15mg..........................

The Average Wholesale Price has continued to go up due (I assume) due to lack of competition in the USA. Example in one year, the 15 mg Teva/Barr Capsule rose in price, from $2.57 per capsule, (Brown Cap 1/2 with Clear Cap and white beads) to $2.96 per capsule. This is from year 2009 to 2010. Source REDBOOK Pharmacy's Fundamental Reference 113th edition by PDR Inc page 379 and page 367 for year 2010. Glaxo Smith Kline, stopped making the 5 mg Dexedrine Spansule December 2010, just like they stopped production, of the 5mg I/R Orange Heart embossed E-19 tabs by April of 2009. GSK remained to make the 10mg and 15 mg Dexedrine Spansule until the end of calendar year 2010, again with price increases, the last 2 or 3 years it was manufactured, in various plants, in the USA.

The last official Average Wholesale Price as published in the authority REDBOOK for year 2010 shows a 15 mg Dexedrine Spansule by Glaxo Smith Kline sold for a very high $3.31 per Spansule (with the official patented tapered end look) 1/2 brown embossed 3514, and 1/2 clear with tiny pink beads inside the Spansule.

I have taken this medication, off and on since the year 1969, again in 1975-76, and again, much, much later on, from 1997, until, 2007, (ten years in a row), and like many patients who need the reliability, of the founders of dextroamphetamine, I have been shocked, by two things, I never saw coming.............

1. Outrageous Wholesale Price Increases
2. Product Shortages in the entire dextroamphetamine market
3. Wide ranges of product quality, in the USA of old and new pharma suppliers.

I switched to Barr, during the year 2008, later, by 2009 it was Teva, until the year 2010, and, I personally, was satisfied, with the generic versions of the Capsules in ER form. I did this because my Insurance company would not pay anything for the brand Dexedrine Spansule, going back as far as the year 2006. I paid out of pocket until the retail price rose such, that I felt forced to try the Teva/Barr substitute.

After switching to yet another formulation, to stay in my budget in the USA I stayed on Generic Adderall tablets Instant Release from 2010 until the end of 2014. My insurance company took Adderall in all forms off of their formulary, thus, I like many reading this post, have been in shock all year at the lower quality, and, the frank inefficiency of experimenting with different manufacturers of dextroamphetamine all in the I/R version. I am very displeased with Wilshire generic, and, Teva/Barr generic dextroamphetamine in both 5 mg and 10mg sizes, so much I never want to use that product again. Zenzedi??? Hard to Find, but made by same firm as the
generic, less expensive, dextroamphetamine, in fact the 5mg and 10mg look identical side by side, made by Wilshire of Atlanta Ga under another corporate sister name. Zenzedi claims to offer many more mg tablet sizes up to about 7 sizes

I currently use Instant Release Mallinckrodt 10 mg one at wakeup and one more by 1PM. It is not as good as Dexedrine Dexedrine Spansule, or Dextrostat, the latter discontinued in 2009. I still have several bottles packed full of Dexedrine Spansules that I use to compare results with, that were prescribed to me in the years 2005 and 2006. They are still officially made, but, IMHO would have to be
special ordered,..............why? no major USA chain, or Mom & Pop's I know of carries the name brand, due to high price, and very low demand. The last I heard the patent holder in the USA to market Dexedrine Spansules in either 10mg or 15mg, with the tapered end cap, "Spansule" was Amedra Pharma, who has a contract for Core Pharmaceutical to manufacture the Dexedrine Spansules. Prices,
from here-say, I have heard are from $900.00 to $1,000.00 US + per 100 capsules, on either 10mg or 15 mg, and, I will never pay that price, It is a real shame for everyone in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia what has happened after this Spansule that was made in the USA from 1952 until 2010 by SKF then SKBeecham then Glaxo Smith Kline. If there are any more choices for ER pure Dextroamphetamine, "like Teva/Barr still makes" please someone post your knowledge for the public to know what options we still have.

I'm having nightmares in relation to changes to my dexedrine. I have this consistency and efficaciousness of what I'm taking where everything I experience is like clockwork. I know it's effects on me. I know all the possible side effects i can experience. And while those things have a small range in which I can have differing results to my dexedrine, and when i take it, and what other chemicals are in my body at the time, they're not severe, and they're consistent whichever and however they occur.

But recently in the last year to two years, my life just keeps getting turned upside down because the dexedrine I'm getting is being manufactured either suddenly by different places and being differently packaged, formulated whatever, outside of just meeting the active ingredients standards, or must be at times not meeting the standards they're supposed to in order to cut costs.

The brand varieties of dexedrine really don't work for me at all. I've been on 2-3 different brand versions temporarily with bad results, while the generic from Teva had for years been working extremely well for me. But something changed a while back, and then has changed some more. And now for instance my life gets turned upside down just by the difference of capsule amount. 15mg capsules from Barr still somewhat are effective to me based on what production plant and how they are being manufactured. But changing to 10mg capsules and going back to a HIGHER total dosage, I'm experiencing withdrawal even as I'm supposedly taking the same exact formulation and packaging of the drug. And this version, packaged in these 10mg capsules are like taking a dirty drug off the street, I get anxiety, I don't get focus, it feels awful and dirty, and it gets my brain going in circles.

Now i know someone's "bad" can be someone else's "great" with this kind of thing. Some people can't stand Teva's version and love to death this brand or that brand. I'm well aware that beyond just matching the active ingredients under some supposedly enforced equivalent production standard, different meds from different manufacturing sources affect different people, for good or bad, differently. I'm just so frustrated that as a person reliant on medications such as these, one month i walk into my pharmacy and they tell me suddenly they've changed manufacturers (as is their apparent right to do), or i find out on the internet that the normal manufacturers have changed their production pipeline, and i am given no control over what so greatly impacts my life and ability to function in such a profound way with everything getting turned sideways. And I get no consistency to rely upon as i need.

Not to mention the aforementioned shortage problems. And the price hikes doubling, tripling, quadrupling the price all of a sudden for no apparent reason.

Now I don't take enough psychiatric meds at this point anymore, or just in general, to get an accurate sampling, and as a result, more accurate perception of whether the proper manufacturing practices of psychiatric pharmaceutical meds are being observed or not currently, but I can tell you in the last couple years I myself am running into this problem with the few meds i do take, a lot. Where suddenly the pharmacy with my other two meds have switched to a different source of generic and these other versions are just terrible in regards to efficaciousness and additionally cause me to experience huge side effects. Based from where i sit, having dealt with taking such medications for more than a decade, again in my case, with my meds, it seems as if across the board taking generics drugs, they are getting cheaper, pharmacy chains are ditching quality for newly available or other cheaper alternatives for stock and supply, all at the expense of cutting corners with patients like us suffering as a result.

I know how you feel I just started bupropion xl 150mg (I currently take 15mg × 3 a day dex spansules in mb Canada I don't think they are generic bcuz I think we only have one kind of dex spansules), and I take venlafaxine xr 600 mgs a day and .5 lorazepam sublingual as needed I take 2 at bedtime but can take 3/day..my worry is that the buprion xl I take is generic (I wanted wellbutrin xl but social assistance pays for generic I'm on disability)and I've heard bad things about generic bupropion and its made my dex not work as good- raised my tolerance and I'm wondering if I need to get it switched to wellbutrin brand name (maybe eds would cover it) or if this is common effect of a DA reuptake inhibitor on a DA agonist I read conflicting info that they potentiate each other or else that bupr. Cancels out the dex...I haven't raised my dex since starting in 2010 I don't even know if people commonly go higher than 45 mg a day with dex spansules. I know I need to go to 300mg withbupro on mMonday I'll see if that works firsf

Everybody that has had problems with the effectiveness of their generic dexedrine, please get on the FDA website and report it through their Medwatch report. The more reports they get the more they can look into this and try to get something done here.
