What are the side effects of a combination of all three medicines for a seizure disorder? Have been on the Depakote and Topamax for years with the Kepra only recently added for partial seizures. I noticed that my hair is now thinning dramatically and I'm now suffering from insomnia! I'm thinking it may have something to do with the addition of the Kepra. Am I correct? Is there a solution for this problem? Has anyone else ever come across this problem or complaint? I will, of course, consult my neurologist before doing anything. Just wanted to know what you thoughts. ## The basic side effect profile remains the same, and the FDA lists it as including things like nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, sedation, mood changes, weight changes, and the hair loss that you mentioned, however, t...

I want to know what DR means after the prescription name. The pill is Divaloprex DR 500 mgs. ## It stands for delayed release, designating it as a time released formulation, rather than one that released all of the medication, at once. Other commonly used abbreviations for this can include SR, XR and several others. Divalproex, also known as Valproate Semisodium and is most commonly used to treat the manic episodes associated with Bipolar disorder. Side effects may include: nausea, dizziness, weight changes and decreased coordination. ## Bipolar youth is significantly more agitated, upset, looking sad, when given depakote med 500 mg. without the DR on label. I have left a message at new clinic, but receptionist says it shouldn't affect him. Also the color and smell is different, and...

I'm trying to see if I can pay a cheaper price for two different meds, depakote and clozapine? It would help me out a lot to pay less money. Thank you for taking the time to help me out and answer my questions. ## Hi Matheau, You may wish to consider trying a free pharmacy coupon such as the one MedsChat offers here: Rx Savings Card. It can reportedly save anywhere from 15-75% off the cost of your prescriptions and is recognized at over 60,000 pharmacies across the US. Another option is to ask your doctor or pharmacist about patient assistance programs, where they would cover the cost of your medication if you're financially struggling. However, I believe approval is based upon your annual income and not all drug manufacturers offer such support. Nevertheless, it may be worth lo...

How long should one worry about side effects of depakote after taking for 3 months? I have not taken for over a year now but have increased mood changes and impulsiveness. ## Have you consulted a doctor? It would be unusual for effects from a medication to linger for that long after being off of it. What were you taking it for? ## Have been on Divalproex sod dr and I am having a serious reaction which involves itching and rashes on various parts of my body. Can a side effect occur after being on the drug this long? Also, what is the difference between divalproex sod dr and dialproex er? ## Forgot to mention how long I've been on the medication (Divalproex sod dr). Its been since May of this year so its approximately 3 months. ## How long will these two depakote pills I took yesterda...

Normally my daughter takes 1500 milligrams (three 500 mg tabs) of Depakote 2 x per day, however today the pharmacy gave me an eye dropper and "LIQUID" form. The label reads in milliliters so I do not know how many drops to give her? ## Did they not put an amount on the prescription? The should have provided you with an appropriate amount to give her, so you don't have to convert it yourself. If they didn't, you should contact them and ask why they did not do so. No one online can give you answer without knowing the dosage of the liquid, and other specifics. This medication is most commonly used to help prevent seizures. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, mood changes, and weight changes. However, if you can post back...

My sister mixed up her 250 mg am dose of Depakote and her 500 mg pm dose of Depakote this morning. She's waiting for her script to be refilled for her am dosage. Can she cut the 500 mg pill in half so she's not overdosing herself?? ## Hello, Brandy! How is your sister doing? What are the markings on the tablets? I need this information to check and see if they are time released, or are safe to cut. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, hair loss and blurry vision. ## My acid is low and my Dr. told me to take one tablet and cut the other in half. I've been taking Depakote for 11 years and went off of it for 3 months. That was not good. Been back on for 2 months. I just don't feel right. Still side effects of headaches, nervous and some anxiety and aches. Could it be that it stopped working? Or something else? Thanks. ## Were you taking it as a mood stabilizer due to being bipolar or did you use it as anti-convulsant? Did you taper off when you stopped or did you just go cold turkey? It could be that you're brain had been "rewiring" itself so to speak, and now it's back in the process of changing again. So it might just be something that will pass as your brain readjusts to it. ## It’s for anxiety and mania. But it’s been like 3 months. It’s working for the worst but I’m just off. M...

My daughters Dr. put her on depakote and it made her very mean and she wanted to jump on me and her sister. She is not a violent person. I called 911 and held her down till help got her. The police took her to jail even after I begged them to take her to the hospital and it was caused by a reaction from a new med her Dr. put her on. Now she has a domestic violence charge and had to stay in jail overnight and now has to be on probation, go to anger management classes and pay court costs. Is there anyway to get these things off her record? She doesn't even remember what happened. I did not press charges and neither did her sister. She also has a 2 y/o daughter and is a very good mother. She, her sister and her daughter live with me. I'm having to pay the court costs, the anger man...

I read somewhere that if you started taking it for bipolar that if you stop you could get seizures or have this happen. can anyone help please! ## Is there anyone out there that could give me some insight on depkote withdrawal? Is there anything I can take otc to help? Thanks! ## If you stop an anticonvulsant abruptly, it does create the risk of seizures, even if that's not what you were taking it to treat. And no, ...

Is depakote similar to neurontin? Can an individual just abruptly stop taking this mood stabilizer because they feel they don't need it without replacing it with something else? Does this cause weight gain? ## They both treat the same types of conditions and no, you shouldn't stop either one abruptly, because it could create the risk of seizures. Stopping one doesn't usually cause weight gain, but it can be a side effect of taking them. Other side effects may include nausea, mood swings and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Just needing to know if Depakote and Neurontin work basically the same? I realize neither should be stopped abruptly. But, my question is, do they both work in the same ways? ## These are two different compounds that work in two entire...

Ive been on depakote 125mg for a week. Ive had what feels like a severe panic attack for almost that whole week. I was just wondering, ive only been on it a week would it be ok to just stop, because i cant function like this. Its awful, and i never had this problem before taking this drug. ## Hello, Lindsay! How are you? Anxiety can be a side effect of Depakote and most other similar medications. You may also experience dizziness, blurry vision, dry mouth and indigestion. However, these side effects usually start to taper off after about 3 to 4 weeks, once your body gets used to the medication. Have you consulted your doctor? They might be able to prescribe something temporarily to help with the anxiety. ## I have been taking divalproex sod er, twice a day 250mg, for 4 weeks. And I noti...

Why is a medication my doctor gave me to "lower my peak (i can't remember the medical term), causing me more anxiety and panic? Low dose 125 mg Depakote seems to be making my Xanax .5 mg 3 times a day, ineffective as well. So now I have double the anxiety and jittery feelings. He also said to sprinkle some of the capsule on a teaspoon of yogurt or pudding, applesauce, instead of ingesting it. Anyone else been told to do this? He is on vacation of course, and I am thinking of just stopping this medication after 2 weeks. With the high level side effects (he didn't even bother to ask me if I plan to become pregnant) I don't think this is worth the risk if it's not helping me. ## I'm sorry, but it is difficult to answer you, without knowing what condition is being tr...

I have been taking 1250 mg of Depakote for about a month and a half. I was fine the few three weeks or so, but now it seems like I am getting cranky, angry and upset very easily for the last two weeks. My psychiatrist just had me take a blood sample to see if she wants to raise my dose as I can't seem to get through the whole day without crying at times. Tonight my boyfriend asked me if I was feeling confused and told me I was being nasty and upset lately. Well, I broke down in tears, natural response for me when this happens. And now he doesn't want to talk to me. I am very hurt and am calling my psychiatrist Monday morning as soon as hr office opens. By the way, she is treating me for mood disorders, not bi polar disorder. Do you think I am on the right meds, and how can I sto...

I have been on depakote for 5 years. 3 months ago I got a small rash and went to the Dr. She treated with hydroxizine with no success for 2 months then referred me to a dermapathologist. The dermapathologist looked at it and said it was stevens Johnson syndrome and to stop the depakote which I did. He gave me a shot of kenalog, singulair, and topical steroids. As of yesterday the rash is still spreadi g out of control. Any ideas? I'm desperate, tried every OTC potion cream and pull. ## How long ago did you receive the shot? The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and drowsiness. Are you on any other medications? Has there been any change? What other medications have you tried? Have you gotten a second opinion?

To make a long story short, I may not be having seizures. Dr. took one EEG and said I had two seizures in 20 minutes! What are seizures? What do they feel like? I have no idea what this doctor is talking about. I have never passed out. I'm a 61 year old female; active and maybe have 1 cold/year. I started taking the depakote this past saturday; 1 in am, the other at pm. It made me so sick, double vision, mean, angry. I do not have biopolar. So the total number of pills since saturday I have taken 2 full days of depakote and only one pill yesterday that made me so sick (5 pills total). I know I have to taper; should I take one more tablet today and stop? Thank you. ## It can vary from person to person, depending on the type of seizure and the severity. My husband has Alzheimers and became combative at the Memory Care Facility where he lives. They sent him to the hospital which sent him spiraling down to probably late stage ALZ now. They kept him on lots of haldol for about 2 weeks. He couldn't walk anymore, didn't talk, couldn't feed himself and rarely opened his eyes. After trying other meds, they put him on Depakote. He remained there for another 2 weeks weaning off the Haldol and then went back to the facility. He was still in withdrawal and it took another month to get it all out of his system. But as soon as he returned they put him on Depakote only. 1000mg at night, now changed to 250 in the morning and 1000 at night. He is now awake, talking and no longer combative. He just gets agitated when they need to change his...
