What is a good substitute for Darvocet N/100 for treating pain?

Darvocet contains the active ingredients Acetaminophen and Propoxyphene, it was really the mildest narcotic pain reliever on the market.

As to an alternative that might have the same pain relieving properties, have you tried Tramadol? It is not a narcotic, but works very similarly.

It is also available with Acetaminophen, under the trade name Ultram.

There are some other narcotic+Acetaminophen combinations on the market, but most will be stronger than the Darvocet was, even at their lowest dosages.

Here are the links to a couple that you can check out and discuss with your doctor:

Does any one else have any suggestions?

The problem many patients have with Tramadol (ultram) is severe GI upset. Over the years DCN-100 has been studied in large double-blind studies and show to of very little difference that Tylenol in the management of pain. However, there are people out who were on DCN-100 that cannot not get the same pain relief without going to the more potent and potentially addictive pain meds. I find it amazing that FDA withdrew a drug that was approved before I graduated pharmacy school in 1984! But what's done is done and maybe a call to action might get FDA to withdraw their petition. In the meantime other substitutes that I might suggest are Lortab 2.5mg/500mg. It's low dose hydrocodone/APAP and is available as a generic as well. I've seen others suggest codeine to. A good compounding pharmacy can always adjust the dosing too if it's too high or still too low and can adjust the APAP. Hope that helps. Steve, RPh

It is really sad that Darvocet N 100 was taken off the market. Contrary to the reports I have been reading, the drug was removed from the European market because of the increasing number of overdoses, not any cardiac problems. It (Darvocet) is also one of the ingredients in the "Suicide Cocktail", a favorite of the euthanesia groups. As usual, the Americans have turned the whole thing into a legal problem, where we now have self-advertised "Darvon lawyers".

I would like to get darvocet. I just had a total knee replacement and the hydrocodone give me hives. Advil is not enough and others like oxycontin make me very sick. I have never had any problems with the darvocet and I can stay ahead of the pain during recovery.

Peggy, I'm sorry, but as was already stated in prior posts, Darvocet is no longer available.

It was removed from the market in the U.S. and most other countries due to the risk it causes of cardiac dangers.

Have you discussed this with your doctor?

Well I had heard that Darvocet was taken off the market but couldn't believe it then I found these posts. Darvocet is the only pain killer that didn't give me side effects. Hyrocodone or any codeine based meds increases my heartbeat and makes me jittery. I don't know what my options will be now. Tramadol, Ultram and the such give me the same side effects too. One would have thought if Darvon was really that bad that they would have figured this out sooner as it has been on the market since the '70's.

Let me know if you find something. I used to take it for foot pain, like half a tablet, or 1/4 if I could get by, just to help me sleep sometimes. Other strong pain killers would upset my stomach or made me loopy. Darvocet did neither, and it helped with the pain. It was on for years and years and they took it off because "they say" it caused arrythmia. Although I believe there were other factors involved, but who knows with the FDA. It's all about money and lawyers.

Since I have suffered with chronic pain since my early 30s I have been on Darvocet. I have had other drugs that for one reason or another didn't jive with my system. The only other drug that has helped me is methodone. Yes it is controversial but it truly works. I live what is a almost pain free life and I am able to work.

I hadn't heard of methadone. I'll ask about it next time I see my doctor. Thank you.
