Periactin, which contains the active ingredient Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine, normally used to treat allergies.

And, just like any medication, it does have risks and side effects, so no, just using it in attempt to gain weight is not considered safe.

It can cause an increased appetite in some people, which sometimes causes them to gain some weight, however, it is usually not significant and the effects don't continue, when someone stops the medication.

In addition, any method of gaining weight artificially, that doesn't involve a healthy diet and exercise can have severe detrimental effects on your health.

Are there any other questions?

It's safe..but you would need to reduce it...like skip a couple of days..don't skip meals. Add more calories, less junk food, drink plenty of water, less pop, just eat healthy and add ensure plus

I'm 20 years old and I'm very slim. I need to add a few pounds. Can someone tell me if periactin is a wise choice of medicine to gain weight, and what dosage would be appropriate for weight gain? I'm very skinny and also healthy.

You can only get this from your doctor if he or she thinks it's ok..you will probably be prescribed 4mg..it will make you very, very drowsy first week or two..after that you will be fine..it really works and keeps you hungry..eat a lot of healthy fats, red meat, tuna, peanut butter sandwiches, drink plenty of milk, water and juice..very little pop..add some ensure plus to your diet I'f you like to...you will see n feel results in a week

@Chanel & Tyty - Cyproheptadine (Periactin) is recognized as a prescription allergy medication here in the US. So you would have to discuss this treatment option with your doctor if it's something you're still interested in trying.

@Chanel - Just out of curiosity, what makes you think an allergy medication will help you gain weight? I see that it's listed as a possible side effect, but if you're only intending on taking it for that sole purpose, there's no guarantee it will work. We can't pick and choose what side effects we want to experience unfortunately... It seems to me that a proper diet and strength training regimen would probably provide a more long term means of managing (quality) weight and not just storing extra fat - which we know is all too easy to put on from sitting around and eating "whatever". I'm not saying you do this or anything like that, but merely wanted to point out that diet/exercise is the most fundamental way to gain, lose, or maintain weight. Have you considered contacting a dietician to assist with meal planning? I don't mean to get off topic here.

I'm giving my 17 month old baby Cypro B Plus Syrup and it's not helping. He's still not eating, actually he is spitting out food. What else can I give him to build his appetite?
