Could Use Help Finding A Doctor That Prescribes Methadone

Hello, I have raced horses my whole life and been in multiple accidents over the years and now have arthritis in my neck, back and shoulder. I was put on oxycodone for about 2 years but afraid I was getting addicted so I quit taking it and my dr has since retired. My pain is getting worse and worse and I've had a few people tell me that methadone would work good and I wouldn't crave it like the oxycodone. I don't have insurance so I'd be self pay, but I would really like to find a dr in the Lebanon, OH area that could hopefully prescribe this for me. Thank you very much

That's not necessarily true, Methadone is actually well known for causing cravings, as well as severe withdrawals. That's why most people that are treated with it for addiction end up on a lifetime maintenance dose of it and never get completely drug free.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

On the Oxycodone, were you abusing it, or just taking it as prescribed? Because, unless you were abusing it, then you weren't becoming addicted, you were just dependent on it, which can happen with anything that you ingest regularly for a long period of time.

Due to the new regulations that were put in place last year, if you require such a medication on a long-term ongoing basis, you'll need to see a pain management specialist, a regular doctor won't be able to prescribe it.

Can anyone recommend a good doctor in that area?

Some doctors might be reluctant to prescribe anything, since you don't have insurance, because that makes it easier for someone to doctor and pharmacy hop.

I have to disagree with you about methadone causing cravings. It's the only opiate I've ever been prescribed that DIDN'T cause cravings, but totally killed them. Over time I've also been able to taper somewhat, which for me is a small, but wonderful, victory.

Also, a number of the side effects - including constipation - go away after the first few days of treatment. I'm also hypothyroid (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis) and am more prone to constipation than your average guinea pig, so I was sensitive to that side effect of it at first. However, if you're on too much methadone it DOES become a problem, but that's another matter. If your dose is sufficient and you take it as prescribed, eat a sensible diet, then it's not as big a deal for MOST people.
