Contrave And Bad Breath

Hello, I am on week 4 of Contrave and have lost 11lbs. Ever since starting this medication my husband says my breath is bad. I drink a lot of water and have mints but this is like coming up from my stomach. Other than that I haven't had bad side effects. I do sweat more at the gym where as before I didn't. But anyone else experience this or have a solution? I'm very diligent about oral hygiene.

I'm not seeing that listed among the side effects, but it can cause some gas and dry mouth, which may be contributing to the problem. Especially, since you said it seems to be coming up from your stomach.

Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, insomnia and anorexia.

Has anyone else on Contrave experienced this?

I am currently on week 5 and have lost 20lbs. I too am cautious of halitosis from the med. I drink plenty of water even with mint diffused into it. Brushing 3 times a day and mouth washes. It's just the gastric juices and our bodies in ketosis.

I STARTED IT AS WELL.BEEN ON IT ALMOST A WEEK.AND IF I DON'T HAVE WATER I GET COTTON MOUTH AND BAD BREATH.NEVER HAD THAT BEFORE WONDER WHY IT DOES THAT?

I've been on Contrave 3 wks having some nausea and headache in the evening but not seeing any results in decreased appetite or any weight loss praying this will change

I have been on Contrave for a month and have lost 10 lbs and definitely see a decrease in my appetite. I, too, experienced bad breath shortly after starting the medication. I am very conscience of it but do feel as though it is getting worse.

I've been on Contrave for 4 weeks. I have lost 7 lbs. I am on other meds witch cause the weight gain. My husband said when he kisses me goodnight, my breath smell like poop.i might be imaging but it think I have no. I will not give Contrave up. What can I do?

I just started Contrave and I drink a Activa probiotic after.
I think it helps with gut health.

I too have the metallic breath… originally thought it was dehydration but does not go away after drinking water or brushing or increasing food intake. Any remedies? I have taken bupropion on it’s own and never experienced this. Probably naltrexone part of it.

Anyone get their liver checked? Could be waste products building up and being released in saliva as both naltrexone and bupropion are known to cause it on their own at higher doses.

Update took some liver health pills from NOW and bad taste went away after stopping contrave in 2 days… I guess I may have NAFLD as I gained weight in the core area or visceral organs. Will try contrave again after a losing some weight the nutrisystem way or as my liver gets less fat.

I too am on Contrave, about 5-6 weeks now. Yes, I too have the dry mouth (xerostomia) and a constant bitter taste. As a dental hygienist, it’s super important that you’re diligent with your oral hygiene. Dry mouth causes plaque to adhere to your teeth more quickly. Plaque is full of odor causing bacteria! Having poor hygiene along with dry mouth can cause rapid decay as well. Brush after each meal, floss at least once a day (before bed), and rinse with Listerine. Also a good mouthwash to use specifically for dry mouth is Biotene. Chew sugar free gums and mints. Keep in mind that carbohydrates cause plaque. Also, remember to brush your tongue! Bacteria gets trapped here as well! Hope this helps!
