Contact Dermatitis Or Allergy

Updated

I have been taking suboxone for 2 years. Out of nowhere I just recently (2 weeks) developed what appears to be contact dermatitis. It started as a single red itchy spot and has spread ferociously over the last 2 weeks. Nothing has changed dosage wise. I also took in two foster kittens but the first red spot occurred before the kittens came and I have owned cats my entire life. Is it possible to develop an allergy to suboxone at random? There is no other side effects, no swelling of face or tongue no nausea or dizziness. The dermatitis (we'll call it) is only on my torso and arms. I just need to know if it's even possible to develop an allergy to this after being on it for so long? It doesn't make sense. Please help!

Hello, James! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you're having.

Contact dermatitis is called that, because it is a contact allergy, so you wouldn't develop it from a medication that you take orally. It has to be from something your skin is coming in contact with. For instance, I get it from a certain ingredient in some toothpastes, if I accidentally get some on my face.

However, Suboxone can cause a rash and hives as a side effect, so that might be why it's occurring. The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may also cause other side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, constipation and headache.

And yes, our bodies do change with time, so there is always a chance of developing a new allergy to something, or to start experiencing new side effects, it isn't common, but has been known to happen.

Have you had the rash checked out, yet?

Thank you for your reply. I went to a dermatologist, the contact dermatitis is merely what we think it is. It looks like it. They prescribed oral and topical steroid to calm the rash. It seems to be working. But if it comes back after the steroids are done I need to consider the possibility that it is an allergic reaction to something I'm around or taking. As you said, it is rare, but not impossible that I developed an allergy to it after this amount of time and that worries me obviously.
