Coming Off Propranolol 80mg

Updated

I've been taking propranolol 80mg once a day for over 2 years for anxiety that caused me to have severe chest pain and to feel dizzy. It definitely made me feel better but the cause of my anxiety was due to where i worked and now I have moved work to somewhere that is a big advocate of helping employers with mental health. This has greatly helped the mental side of my anxiety so now I want to stop taking them before I become too dependent on them.

What I want to know is are the side effects you get from it really bad or does it depend on the person. I dont want to stop and all the feelings i used to get come rushing back.

Thank you for any advice.

It can depend on the person, but it is always best to taper such a medication, since the NIH warns that stopping it abruptly could cause rebound effects, such as elevated heart rate, and blood pressure, which could result in health dangers.

Are you on any other medications? Have you spoken to your doctor about tapering off?

I find by reducing the medication by halving the tablet, taking a half for a week then the other half another week, then quarter it for a week, then the other quarter for the next week, just reducing them like that. You can buy the tablet cutter for a few dollars from the chemist. If your tablet is coated insert the tablet's halves inside an empty clear capsule again from the chemist. That is how I reduced my pristiq, gradually, with no side effects. I hope this proof is helpful.

Hi,

I was on Propranolol for over 2 years when I stopped. I stopped because they longer was benefitting me. As my doctor explained to me for those taking it for anxiety after a certain amount of time they don't become as effective if you never tackled the root cause of your anxiety. I also wanted to come off as they was making me extremely tired all the time. For me coming off them was quite easy. They just halved my dose and then halved it again and then just stopped altogether.

I didn't experience any negative side effects personally and actually felt better for it. I can tell the difference when I do have an anxiety attack because my heart feels like it is going to burst out my chest but I have learnt to deal with this with more natural methods.

Every person is different so just speak to your doctor and the will help you stop in ways that are best for you :)

Personally, for me it went well, I didn't get any of the scary reactions that were written over the internet or anything like that. I actually felt better for coming off them as they were making me extremely tired all the time.

I went from 80mg a day for 2 years to 40mg a day, which then after a week I took every other day. Spreading it apart until I no longer felt like I needed them. My doctor did say I could drop to 10mg if I wanted to really go slowly but I felt no need to.
