Citalopram, the active ingredient in Celexa is an SSRI antidepressant.

The amount of people that gained weight, while using it, is measure at right around 1%.

Other side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness and dry mouth.

I have read that the number is closer to 25%-but I believe it is even higher. I gained 60 pounds while on 20mg of Citalopram for 1 year and 4 months. I was a physically fit ballet dancer when I started. I was at the lowest healthy weight for my height. After taking Citalopram I am now overweight and the weight is extremely difficult to lose. I did not increase my food intake. It did not make me crave carbs nor increase my appetite. Citalopram ruined my body. Of course the manufacturer won't admit that their drug causes weight gain--it would make their sales drop. Instead, they perpetuate the myth that it is the user's fault. Their clinical studies were based on the short term and did nothing to address weight gain caused by long term use. I never had difficulty maintaining my weight before using this"medication". I wish I could sue the manufacturer from robbing me of my physique and physical strength. It was not worth it.

I have been on Celexa (which is the same drug) for almost a year and have gained 30 pounds. Just got the word from my Doc today that I can start tapering off - yay!!! Really hoping this weight just drops off, exercising daily and eating very well hasn't been doing me any good

I also have gained so much weight!! and it is nearly impossible to get rid of - am so frustrated. I take it before I go to bed and have been taking 10mg instead of the usual 20mg so I can ease off of it.. Has anyone found a difference when off of it?
