Cipro And Anxiety/systemic Issues

Updated

RXd Cipro 500mg bid x 7 days in mid-July for e coli kidney infection. Cleared infection. However, broke out in major seborrheic dermatitis all over face, head, and groin while taking. Also noticed anxiety ramping up while taking with decreasing appetitie and gastric upset/loose stools. I was already suffering from knee pain and plantar fasciitis, but have since developed more widespread muscle pain and more joint pain elsewhere, especially left elbow and hips, and the knee and heel feel worse than ever. No physical reason for this, and my achilles are more sore than ever as well. I lost 26 pounds since the day I started Cipro course for no other explainable reason, and my weight was stable before taking it for months. My anxiety is now intolerable if I don't take Xanax XR .5 at least once per day, but that's all I take. I am diabetic and was taking the Cipro concurrently with 800mg of Ibuprofen 2-3x day. I also suffered several episodes of hypoglycemia while taking it and afterwards. Gastric issues continue now almost 50 days later. Anxiety is still very high. Pain in joints and muscles is still very high. I have regained about 6 pounds. Still, I can't help but point at the Cipro as being the cause since all of this started at the exact same time as being prescribed the Cipro. I am also allergic to Ziac and beta-blockers, which they knew. I can't believe these effects are still going on a month and a half after finishing the Cipro. Is this possible?

HI, Johnny! Sorry that you're so miserable.

Is it possible according to the current testing evidence? No, there's nothing from the drug testing to support such.

However, if you're asking if it's possible from anecdotal evidence from others that have taken it, then yes, it is. I'm not sure if it's due to the overuse of antibiotics, or something else, but many people have been experiencing very odd side effects from taking them and there are many others just like yourself who have found that the ill effects linger for very long periods of time, after they finish the course of treatment.

Learn more Cipro details here.

Have you consulted your doctor? You need to have your achilles checked out, since a known side effect of this class of antibiotics is tendonitis.

Yes....I've seen many doctors the last month and a half. That's actually how I got prescribed the Xanax. The weight loss is concerning, as it brought on fears of cancer, but when I realize that the weight loss started at the EXACT same time as I started the Cipro, then it kind of seems obvious that the Cipro must have played a role. Otherwise that would be quite the coincidence. I have been a chronic user of high dose Ibuprofen for years, and was taking it with the Cipro. There is a warning with Cipro that usage with NSAIDS can cause more side effects, particularly with the central nervous system....anxiety for example. I was never told this ahead of time. Everything I am experiencing is listed as "rare" side effects of Cipro....but obviously since they're listed then they can occur. And since side effects occur at 1-2%, and considering how often an antibiotic like Cipro is prescribed, then it seems to me very possible that there is a connection here. Being a person that has already experienced an anaphylactic reaction to medication once (Ziac), then I know first hand that just because side effects may be rare with medications, they DO happen. It seems that doctors are just too quick to dismiss these connections just because they may be "rare". There is a reason Cipro has a Black Box warning from the FDA. I have read case upon case online of people that have experienced strange and somewhat similar reactions to Quinolones. I certainly didn't make up what I'm experiencing. I thought I was having a heart attack a few weeks ago because of the range of symptoms I was experiencing and ended up getting a heart cath because of it. My heart was found to be fine, but now I have a huge bill. I have seen my diabetes specialist. I have seen my primary care physician. I have an appointment with a GI doc. I have seen a therapist. I am probably going to be getting a referral to a psychiatrist. I am a 42 year old man and I have had my share of health issues over the years, but these now seem unique in their combination and the timeline matches to the Cipro course. Yes, it killed the kidney infection, so it did its job in that regard, which was necessary, but I seem to be paying a difficult price.
