I do have high cholesterol and high triglycerides(sp?) but the Cholestyramine was prescribed for me for diarrhea and such since my gall-bladder surgery. i am confused as it is not on the instructions re: what I went to the doctor to have "fixed"? I was losing my stools 3 or 4 times per day. ## Cholestyramine can be used to treat diarrhea, because it makes bile acids, such as those that may be secreted after gall bladder surgery, from being osmotically active. When they are osmotically active, they attract more water from the body into the bowel, which can cause diarrhea. It may cause side effects, such as: constipation, nausea, tooth discoloration and premature tooth decay.

I have began taking Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension for the severe diarrhea I have been living with following the removal of my gall bladder in June, 2018. It seems to be working, but I am con- cerned about it absorbing the blood thinning medication I have been on following 3 strokes. There have been no more strokes since beginning Plavix 6 years ago. Does anyone know the answer? I would appreciate any help given towards answering this question!

It really helps my stomach but the joint pain is getting bad. ## Hi nickel, Sorry to hear about your situation. 2 years is a long time to take something without experiencing any adverse reactions. According to DailyMed (NIH), musculoskeletal side effects such as muscle/joint pain, backache, & arthritis are all listed as known side effects of Cholestyramine. I hope you find relief soon! ## i followed up with my doctor ...

For the past six months, I've taken cholestyramine~ 4 scoops a day. I've discovered that (silk brand) coconut milk interacts with cholestyramine and makes it frothy! And it masks that factory taste! Chunky applesauce also adds texture. Anyhow, the cholestyramine is working! ## Hello, Blue! How are you? That's awesome! I'm glad you've discovered something that works. The prescribing information provided by the FDA also says that it can be mixed with soups or other fruits, such as chunky pineapple, as long as their is enough liquid. The typical side effects of this medication may possibly including dizziness, drowsiness and constipation. Is there anything I can help with? ## Hi I just started this med on Monday. I have no copper level and my white blood platelets count is 38. I take one packet of Prevalite (Cholestyramine) in the morning. Does anyone else have the same problem? ## Were these conditions present before you started taking the Prevalite, or did they only appear after you started taking it? It is most commonly used to help lower cholesterol and to treat itching in people that produce too much bile acid. The NIH warns that letting it sit in your mouth for too long can cause dental damage. ## This is a condition I got after 8 years taking the medicine. I have been going to an infusion center for 18 copper infusions. Dr. Can't figure out what is wrong. Probably a bone marrow test will be ordered up.Not looking forward to that. And a have felt fine .Never in any pain.I walk 10 miles...

I have chronic itching due liver disease. My dr. said that taking cholestyramine may help. Can you offer any insight ## Hello, Viktoria! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about your health issues. Cholestyramine helps remove bile acids from the body and in many case where someone has a liver problem, the symptoms they experience such as the itching, are due to it not being properly processed out, anymore. So yes, it may help you, others have had success with it. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have been using Cholestyramine powder for a long time for digestive problems. It works great, now my prescription provider will not cover it but will cover Cholestyramine Light. Is there a difference and what is it? ## Cholestyramine Light is just one of a few brand names for Cholestyramine.
