Cholestyramine Versus Cholestyramine

Updated

I have been using Cholestyramine powder for a long time for digestive problems. It works great, now my prescription provider will not cover it but will cover Cholestyramine Light. Is there a difference and what is it?

Cholestyramine Light is just one of a few brand names for Cholestyramine. They do contain the same ingredient, but may be used in a different manner than the powdered form. I haven't been able to confirm if the Light version is an oral tablet or something else.

User guidelines note that:
Cholestyramine is available as powder form, in 4 gram packets, or in larger canisters. In the United States, it can be purchased either as a generic medicine, or as Questran or Questran Light (Bristol-Myers Squibb).

I do know that sometimes insurance companies won't pay for the generic version of a drug and only cover the brand names, due to a higher cost for the generic version; but this typically doesn't determine a drugs effectiveness, so you "shouldn't" have anything to worry about when going with the "Light" brand.

I hope this information helps!

The light form of cholestyramine has nutrasweet. It mixes better and tastes better. I use the generic form by Sandoz. I get the packets and mix with water daily.
