I am on day 5 of chantix and am having constipation. I have never had trouble with my bowels before now. I took miralax for a few days and had a little diarrhea so I quit taking it. Any tips on a happy medium so that I can get my stomach working correctly? Also, an someone give me an idea of how long it usually takes to quit completely? I have cut back about half (was smoking a pack a day) but am determined to quit. I'm scared because I have a lot of friends who smoke and I know this is a complete lifestyle change (been smoking for about 15 years). Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Hello, Jessica! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having.

Have you tried a fiber supplement? If your doctor approves, it may be beneficial. Anytime I suffered constipation from medications, I found fiber supplements to help the most.

The quit time can vary from person to person, some people have done so in a week, but for others it's taken several months.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of Chantix as possibly also including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, insomnia and flatulence.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Thank you so much. I started fiber 2 days ago and it seems to be helping some. I am down to only 1-2 cigs a day after a week. I really think those may be out of habit because I usually can't finish the whole thing. Please help in keeping me motivated!!

It's tough to do, but you'll feel healthier and you'll smell better, once you quit!!!

I love the fact that my home no longer smells like stale old smoke. :-)

I started chantix 12 days ago and I smoked my last cigarette 6 days after starting chantix, and I'm very happy. It's a life changing thing to be smoke free and to stay smoke free, cause I have smoked so long, I'm shamed to say. I'm having the gas and constipation and the gas is in my back. I haven't started with the dreams and i pray they don't start. I want to be smoke free. The cost, the smell, the isolation that it brings. I don't want to be like my mother smoking herself to death, being on oxygen and still smoking, I can change my sleep habits (now that I am retired) if the dreams get to be too much, but this gas and constipation is making me miserable. And this time I am not gonna stop taking it, as I feel better even with the exception of the constipation. I feel good about myself. I've always drank plenty of water and I've started detoxing. I pray this doesn't last. How long does the constipation last?
