Celexa - Difference In Manufacturers

Updated

My daughter has been doing well on 30mg of the generic for celexa, citalopram which is manufactured by Torrent. They are small pink oval pills marked with 1010.

After a couple of days of unbearable behavior which is indicative of not taking her medicine and her telling me she felt like she wasn't on her meds, I realized, that the pills were different. After some research these bigger pink pills marked with 508 are manufactured by Caraco.

Could there be that significant difference in manufacturers of the same drug?

I assume you mean 20mgs? Because that is the dosage in both of the tablets you mentioned.

However yes, there can be differences from one generic medication to another. They are allowed to differ from the name brand, in the amount of the active ingredient, by as much as plus or minus 20%. They are not, however, required to measure against each other, so what might be occurring here is that she was getting more of the medication in the tablets manufactured by Torrent, but the new ones from Curacao might not contain as much of it.

Have you tried asking the pharmacy if they can order the other one in for her?

Yes, yes, yes! I agree! I'm on 10mg and when I picked-up this past month's prescription, I saw the pills were different. Assuming all was ok, I just started taking the new refill, and as time went on, it was as if I was off medication. I finally contacted the pharmacist this morning to ask if they used a new generic brand, and he said yes, it was by Caraco. I then asked if it was a placebo, which it isn't (according to the pharmacist). He said he would replace the remaining pills with the generic by Torrent (which I'd been using...successfully). I understand people respond differently to medication(s); for me, the change from Torrent to Caraco was unsuccessful. A few lessons learned: 1. Don't trust the pharmacist when he or she replaces the manufacturer of a generic drug and assume all generic drugs are "equal". 2. Trust my instincts on prescribed drugs....if something seems "off" it probably is.

Same thing happened to me. I was taking Celexa manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticlals. Suddenly the pharmacy was no longer selling the Celexa from Torrent and they were selling Celexa manufactured by Caraco. I bought it and my depression came back with full force. Talked to the Pharmacist and he told me he was unable to get the pills from Torrent. As a result I had to start buying the brand name pills (not generic anymore). Thank God I had insurance. A few months later I read somewhere that Torrent Pharmaceuticals had some problems.
