Information I've gathered actually states that Baxter Healthcare Corporation has discontinued production of Revex (Nalmefene HCl Injection). As far as I know, this was the primary manufacturer of Nalmefene, but there may be others out there which I haven't located.

I can however verify that Nalmefene was in fact classified as a Prescription Only medication before it was discontinued by this company.

I hope this info helps!

Sam, did you ever find anything out? I know it's being released in the UK where they still have patent protection. I need it for my girlfriend too... sounds like we're in the same boat.

Selincro cannot be bought in Canada, or bought internationally to be delivered to Canada. It's generic, sister drug Naltrexone is what you should be looking for. It does precisely the same thing - both are opiate blockers. Because naltrexone is generic, it is much less expensive too! See cthreeeurope for more information on how to order.

It is true that both Nalmefene (Selincro) and Naltrexone (ReVia) are opioid receptor antagonists. However, the new drug Selincro has significant advantages. Unfortunately, it is not available in Canada yet, awaiting the approval by Health Canada. While ReVia is available, it is quite expensive and most provincial drug plans do not cover it. If you have a private insurance, it should be covered.

Hello,
If you do an extensive research maybe you can find company who will ship it to Canada, I got mine in Europe, it is very expensive, approximately $10/pill ( in my case daily). I am on it for the past month and it made huge difference in my life, lets put this way....I am not there but I have not gotten stupid drunk for the past month, this includes one week all inclusive holiday in Mexico over the Christmas.... you know those resorts. Before you start taking it I highly recommend reading the book of Roy Escapa "the cure of alcoholism"it will explain the process of Sinclair's pharmacological extension. I admit I was hoping for a miracle pill which will make me stop drinking at once, instead I fund a recipe exactly descriped in the book........ the reductions of alcohol are gradual, self control is an issue however I found myself drinking slower and slower ,3 drinks ( strictly measured) can last entire evening. I wake up refreshed and no more afraid to show my eyes to clients the following morning. I hope to come to the point that the craving will subside to the point that I will make a choice of Alcohol free day... and I will take it from there, if not ,I will be thankful for the reduction of consumption. I have enough of being a "functional alcoholic" I have noticed that the "functional" was getting less and less functional......slippery slop,
: more exceptions , more regrets and the only person not noticing it WAS ME.
The drug is not design neither for people who are addicted to opiates...since it will block them totally, and cause severe withdrawals nor for heavy alcoholics with withdraw symptoms - same consequences. Please read the book.

Selincro is the next generation of the drug designed to be metabolized outside the liver so it appears to be safer for people with liver damage, nevertheless I suspect that since naxeltrone is no longer under the patent protection selincro is the way to make money by the manufacturer...anyway I do not care. I invested $4k for 6 month treatment and we will see, 6 months of relatively normal existence, is worth it.
I was really, really afraid of the side effects listed in the pamphlet I got some very short and mild ones then I realized that by law they have to list all extremes...too much ado about nothing" Good Luck!!!

To make it perfectly clear, I am not a medical doctor and the above is nothing else than personal and strictly private experience. It is imperative that you share the course of action wth somebody close that they know you are on opiat blockers.

Thank you "happier & optimistic". It is a terrible affliction and I am probably in exactly the same boat as you - a functioning alcoholic. I can function (most of the time) but I know it is taking a toll on my health. I tried naltrexone and it didn't do much. I will try to get Selincro from Europe. It is a shame it is not available in Canada. I guess the government needs the tax revenues from booze sales. Good luck!!!!

Hi Hope. Some people can be helped by Naltrexone:

psychologytoday.com/blog/overcoming-addiction/201307/drink-your-way-sober-naltrexone

What I find is that if I manage not to drink anything for one day, then I can drink nothing for weeks until something triggers it. Then to stop again I take Antabuse, which forces you not to drink - otherwise, you get very sick. Good luck!

I am desperate to find out if Revia injections( called Vivitrol in the US) are available anywhere in Canada? I believe there are a few rehabs here that do it, but my son has been to two in the past where this was not offered. We're not looking for another treatment center, but simply a doctor who gives these injections. He's been doing his best with Naltrexone but keeps relapsing. Does he have to go to the US?

Naltrexone does not work while abstinent. It has to be taken only when drinking and not every day. One hour before drinking to retrain the brain. Taking every day while not drinking is actually worse. Read "the cure for alcoholism" by Roy Eskapa. This could be a life saver for your son.

There is a new clinic in Vancouver called Alavida I believe. This may be what you are looking for. Our son also has struggles with alcohol. He is in treatment now but I want to keep this information on the back burner for when he gets out. They do try their best but its so hard.
