Can You Absorb Morphine Through The Skin

I tested positive for morphine in my system and do not take it. My husband does and am wondering if handling his would make me test positive?

If all you're doing is touching them, to hand them to him, then no, you shouldn't be absorbing enough for it to be detected, because the tablets are coated.

There are things, however, the can cause false positives. Do you take any medications, including over the counter items?

Yes I do ... my doc has me on Two hydrocodone fives a day and soma...........doesn't help alot so I try alot of over the counter pain relievers, like tylenol Pm, excedrin, and ibuprofen

Kitty, if they are using non-certified tests, which aren't always very reliable, then the Hydrocodone could have easily caused a false positive for another opiate.

In addition, the Diphenhydramine in the Tylenol PM and the Ibuprofen are both also known to cause false positives for other substances.

No and thank you very much! I think I will just quit taking my medications........not all at once........am sick of them anyway and am tired of being treated like crap by my Doctor......thank you so much for your information

Codeine shows up as morphine, being that it metabolizes 10% into morphine, as the reason for the pain relief. NO morphine doesn't metabolize into codeine. If you don't tell them you have a prescription, they will tell you that you tested for morphine, if you did, they will verify at the pharmacy your prescription of codeine.. Will not absorb morphine through skin, one of the reasons it not prescribed by pill often is that most of it doesn't get absorbed through the stomach lining, before it passes. It's not a hydrochloride, so it doesn't dissolve in water (moisture).

Don't take a lot of Tylenol, acetaminophen, it is hard on the liver. That is why in 2014, they have mandatory lowered the maximum amount in prescriptions with acetaminophen to 325mg.

kitty please do not listen to people that tell you that you cannot absorb morphine by handling it. I was addicted to morphine for 8 years by y doctors. It is a very long story, and I will spare you the details as much as possible. After repeated attempts to get help from my doctors to rid my life of this addiction, I finally quit "cold turkey" in 1st July 2011. The withdrawals were hell, but I finally got past the worst of it. What has this to do with your question, please bear with me, and I will explain.

In November, my husband was diagnosed with pleural effusion. In an effort to control his pain, they prescribed oramorph. While giving him one of his doses,some of the oramorph got on my hands, and that night, I was in hell again with withdrawals. Not realizing what had happened, the same thing happened repeatedly at night after I had gone to bed. I couldn't understand what was happening, and then it occurred to me that if people ould absorb morphine through fentinyl patches then it is also possible to absorb other types of opiates through the skin. There was no other explanation. I was having withdrawals from handling my husbands morphine. My realization came at the same time he was switched from oramorph to pill form [severadol]. So, I thought it would be safer for me to handle I was wrong. After handling the pills I experienced the same withdrawals at night. It was not until I started using disposable rubber gloves, that the withdrawals stopped.

Health professionals will probably try to tell you, that I just imagined it, but anyone that has ever had extreme morphine withdrawals, knows that it is not something you an imagine or ignore. Not to mention, most health professionals have never experienced what I have in my life.

Please,take my advice, and where some sort of protective gloves when handling morphine. Health professionals will someday catch up with these facts, and take the necessary precautions, but until then please listen to someone who has experienced this first hand.

Sharon the successful addict has described something that could be psychological. Her withdrawal symptoms are not the same as the effects of the medication. The sight/knowledge/any other triggers for being around morphine could have caused her to have those withdrawal symptoms and resolved with the mind "thinking" that she avoided it with gloves. For the medication needs to pass through the body's system to be broken down and taken up by the body to have its effects. The transdermal patch that she speaks of is Fentanyl and that absorbs through the skin because it is in a different medium than tablets, and with the different medium there are different excipients that allow the absorption and metabolism to differ from tablets. If you were to handle the tablets and may have the effects, it may be the slight chance that the powder that those tablets shed could have landed in some food you ate or you were breathing them in, considering how sensitive your body is to hydrocodone. Healthcare professionals do know what they are talking about, and Sharon just didn't have the best experience.

Ok Sharon,,, If you were giving your husband an oral tablet or capsule then no... It can not be absorbed through your skin. If that was the case then all of us in t If you were administering a subcutaneous medication,, which is a medication that is absorbed under the toung then yes,, What you need to do is poor one tablet into the cap of the prescription bottle and hand it to your husband like that... If he can not so it for himself then Yes,,, wear the gloves.... If you are using the walmart brand urinalysis to test positive then they can absolutly come back with a false positive,,, however,, If you had your urinalysis done in a lab then there is no disputing that....
