Can Tramadol Show Up As Methadon On A Urine Screening

Updated

I have currently been in Suboxone treatment for almost 3 years now. I get urine tested every month, and it is sent to lab. I always show any hospital, dentist, etc my prescription and let them know exactly what the situation is and advise them I CAN NOT have opiates. I recently went to the dentist and has 5 teeth extracted and was in severe pain so he prescribed me tramadol. I then went to my normal Suboxone visit and took my urine test and was told it came up positive for Opiates in March, and positive for Methadone in April. I have not taken any of this and have no clue why it would be positive. Any feed back is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Tramadol is a synthetic opiate; (a very weak one at that in comparison to oxycodone and other drugs in that class). But this would give reason for it to show up positive for opiates. It does not give reason to show up as Methadone though. That is simply a mistake by the lab who did the testing. Deeming it as a false positive is their way of taking the blame off of them and putting it on you.

I hope you can find a way to fight back. You're definitely not alone in this matter.

Yes thats what I was thinking I use to be highly addicted to opiates and have also been in Methadone treatment. The Methadone almost killed me and caused seizures when I detoxed. My urine screenings have came back abnormal but then i would take another one immediately and it was clean..Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it very much!=)

When I on suboxone I was told tramadol causes withdrawal from the suboxone. They gave us a warning sheet St the clinic I was at. No bull.

I was put on 8 mg. Subutex 3xday (same formula & dose as Suboxone, but contains no opiate blocker) to wean off me Oxycontin & Norco after my 17 year-old son died of pain med. OD. Dr. continued me on Subutex for 2 1/2 years (unheard of when used to taper off meds). Said it was for my pain, now. He also added Tramadol (100 mg.). Made no sense to me! He's since lost his license to prescribe (I wonder why!) Thank God, didn't need another addiction problem! When I read your story, the first thing that came to my mind was that they were 'testing' you in a sense. Many Drs. think "once an addict, always an addict", even if addiction was unintentional to begin with. If you didn't actually see the printout of the test results, they may be telling you a 'story' to get a reaction out of you since you took the Tramadol without "asking/telling" them before-hand. Being tested only once per month gives anyone that doesn't want to take the program seriously enough time to 'play'. They may think you are lying about the dentist and are now making up a story to see if you will try to cover up. Sounds far-fetched, but, you never know. Ask to see the print out. Call the lab (if the sample is sent elsewhere for testing), be aware that people touch the specimen cups (they are NOT as sterile as labeled to be, especially when kept in public restroom). BTW...Having your teeth pulled and being in pain is a very valid reason to need relief. Don't feel as though you are 'not allowed' to be comfortable when in you're in pain because you had a problem once. I understand how you feel COMPLETELY, though. Next time, call the Dr. (or clinic) gives you the Suboxone. Explain your circumstances and ask their advice. You're killing two birds with one stone...telling him you need something for pain and asking permission. BTW... Suboxone contains an opiate blocker. I hope you have been told this. If you're ever in an accident or need surgery (while the Suboxone is in your bloodstream) it may be hard for your pain to be relieved to a tolerable level. le. This can cause major problems in an big emergency. If you are taking it for the sole purpose to not experience withdrawls, it is unheard of to take it for 3 years!!!!! It should taken for no longer than a month (doses decreasing every 3-4 days). BTW...Suboxone, when taken for any length of time, causes your body worse symptoms of withdrawl than heroin! Good Luck!!!

The way to "fight back" is understanding how drug testing works. If you tested "positive" on a SCREENING ONLY drug screen...it is just that..a screen. The fast, more inexpensive methods for drug screenings should always state that there is room for false positive/false negative results. You should always have an option to have further testing done on your drug sample to prove you haven't taken a certain drug.

The way to prove a true negative drug screen is to request a GC/MS confirmation. This test is usually a little more expensive but it completely rules out any false positives . The GC/MS method is specific only for that drug (methadone in this case) and will not have any interference from something else you may be taking.

Hope this helps
