Can Methotrexate Be Taken For Long Time? I

I have had severe Arthritis, for along time. I hurt in all my joints all the time badly. I also have High Bloodpressure, one hip replaced and one knee raplacement. Arthritis is in my family. At one time I was diagnosed for Lupus and after being treated for it , I was told (Mayo Clinic)by the doctors that I do not have Lupus. Can that happen? Finally can Methotrexate help me? I would prefer not to take steroids.

Yes, it is possible that you were misdiagnosed as having Lupus.

As to the Methotrexate, it depends on what type of arthritis you have, but some people have gotten very good results from it for rheumatoid arthritis. It may also depend on what other medications you are on.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including body aches, headache, dizziness and blurred vision.

Is there anyone taking this that can chime in?

I have been suffering from joint pain all my life, as a child what my mother called growing pains was so bad it was hard to breath. In 2001 I was diagnosed with undifferentiated connective tissue disease, most likely sarcoidosis, they suspected R.A. but my diagnostics have never come back positive for it as my sed rates are always within normal range. The first doctor put me on methotrexate, and at one point I was on that, emral injection bi weekly and meloxicam. The worst part of using it for me was the hair loss and a fatty liver. I began to realize the treatments were worse than the illness and learned to say no to many of the drugs the doctors prescribed. I am now on Gabapentin 600mg pills prescribed to take 2 pills 3x daily biy I take 1 2x a day for nerve pain. I also take tramadol for pain in my joints as well as meloxicam and methocarbamol. When I have terrible pain that neither of these help I soak in a hot bath, as hot as I can stand it, but always make sure someone is home in case I need help getting out of the tub, heating pads work as well. May I suggest you try the hot baths and heating pads? I decided to embrace the fact that pain is just a part of my life when my youngest sister who was diagnosed with sarcoidosis as well, she always took everything the doctors gave her without question, never did street drugs never drank however she died in her sleep at the side of her 3 young children at age 27. That was a wake up call for me, I began to realize I had choices to make. The tramadol, meloxicam, and methocarbamol were prescribed as a daily regimen but I choose to wait until I can no longer bear the pain, or on days when I know the demands of the days duties will require me to be at my best. Thankfully I am a housewife and am at liberty to take it easy when I need to, I know not everyone is so blessed. My husband helps out a great deal when I am down physically. please consider the cost before the benefit. I use fresh Ginger teas, and other natural remedies much as possible. I am in the process of making a tincture of ginger and prickly ash bark which I harvested from a tree near my husbands water plant. I look at foraging websites for wild plants I can use for just about everything now. I hope this helps you in making your medicinal choices.
