Clorazepate Dipotassium (branded as Tranxene and formerly Azene in the USA) is a benzodiazepine derivative used to treat anxiety, seizure disorders, and manage alcohol withdrawal syndrome. It's not a very commonly used medication for a few reasons. First, it is absorbed erratically and this means the onset of action is variable. In other words, don't take a Tranxene and expect anxiety relief in any certain amount of time. Secondly, clorazepate is not in itself active pharmacologically. Clorazepate needs to undergo liver metabolism before it is active in the body. After clorazepate is metabolized by the liver, it is transformed into a chemical known as desmethyldiazepam (also called nordiazepam and nordazepam sometimes). Desmethyldiazepam is a common active metabolite of many benzo's, including Valium, Librium, and Paxipam. It is very long-acting, with a half-life that can range up to 200 hours. Tranxene has all the disadvantages of all of the benzodiazepines and isn't as reliably absorbed. Might as well go with Valium if a long-acting anti-anxiety agent is needed - it begins to act more quickly and produces the same effects (and side effects) of Tranxene.

I've been prescribed Tranxene for anxiety/depression(PTSD). Since its similar to a benzodiazapine does Tranxene come up as a benzo on a UA?
