I have been on 15 mcgs patches for 5 weeks and they don't seem to work anymore. I have a vascular leg ulcer which is taking ages to heal but the breakthrough pain is horrendous. I'm getting no sleep at all. My GP took me off tramadol and codeine to try these but the pain is unbearable. I've tried cocodamol (over the counter dosage) and naproxen but it doesn't help at all. ## Unfortunately, this medication does not work for everyone to alleviate pain. The U.S. FDA does warn that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. Have you ever tried any other more potent opiates, such as Oxycodone or Morphine? ## I was taken off tramadol and OxyCodone and put on these patches. They told m...

I'm on my 5th week of the 10mg patches. I have no side effects, But it doesn't take my back pain away. It does help. I was on 30mg oxycodone 4 times a day. It did take the pain away. But I lost 35 lb and I didn't have 35lb to lose. I looked like a scare crow. I couldn't eat. I told the pain Dr. to get me off the Oxy. He gave me methadone to get off. It took a month. I go back to the pain Dr Tues. I want to try the Butrans 20. I hate to see the cost. I paid $239.00 for the 10s. ## Hello, Dal! How are you? Have you considered trying the Fentanyl patch? It is a much stronger analgesic and is available as a generic, so it's much cheaper. Learn more Fentanyl details here. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects,...

I went to a Pain a Management Specialist for the fist time. I had been seeing a family doctor that was prescribing suboxone for pain. I have Interstitial cystitis, fibromyalgia, chronic migraine, episodic cluster headaches, just to name a few. I have been desperate for months in pain. Trying every nonnarcotic medicine possible, the suboxone, even at 3 8mg-2mg wasn't touching my pain. My doctor told me I needed to get to a pains specialist, he, I believe just wanted the $250.00 cash for prescribing suboxone! In my desperation I had been taking 4 a day, I know the ceiling is 32mgs. The pain doc put me on Butrans 10mcg/hr patch and told me I could take my suboxone with it if needed. I have needed the suboxone 2 or 3 a day. I forgot during my visit with my pain specialist, to,tell him t...

My doctor put me on butran 10 mg patch. I got my rx filled and received 4 patches. The first on fell off the first night. The second one worked great for the 7 days. The third patch got wet so I had to change it. Now I have the last patch on. It has been 24 hours and it's still on but having no pain relief any advice ## It seems odd that one would work, but not the other. It would make more sense if none of them helped you, at all. The active ingredient Buprenoprhine doesn't work for everyone at relieving pain. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. Are you on any other medications? Have you informed your doctor?

I have been taking 5mg Percocet, 4 times a day. My grandson stole them and I came up short. He said he could not give me them anymore. He said I was a "supplier". They put me on the butrans 10 patch. I am 63 and have fibromyalgia and recovering for 1 year from breast cancer, with a double mastectomy. I have been so sick for the last 3 days and calling the office does no good. They say I am going through withdrawal. I have never experienced anything like this before. I did not know what was happening to me. It scared me. All I could think of was it was like chemo. I had a few of my Percocets left and have been taking 1/2 of one each day to help me get through it. If they drug tested me will it show up different from butrans? ## That is disgraceful what your grandson did but your ...

Forgot to put my patch on before work. It will be 12 hours til I can put it on. What can I expect? ## Hello, Bonnie! How are you? That's not too long of a time period, so things shouldn't get too bad, unless you are very sensitive to medications. You may experience some minor withdrawal effects, such as nausea and headache, according to the NIH. In the future, to avoid any issues, it might be a good idea to use some sort of reminder system to make sure you put it on, such as a phone app. My husband and I use one for our medications, all the time. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

Will going straight from 40mg Norco daily to a Butrans patch cause precipitated withdrawals? ## Yes, it may, since Buprenorphine takes a stronger hold on the opiate receptors than the Norco, so it tends to kick it out, so to speak. The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Did you doctor instruct you to switch immediately? ## I'm waiting for her instructions still and all of the info online is confusing. On their website it says if you're on the equivalent of 30mg morphine or less that you don't have to taper down, but other sites say totally different.

If the butrans patch out of date can u still use it ## Medications do lose effectiveness over time, so it may not work as well as it did, when new. It would be best to dispose of the expired patches and obtain a new supply. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

Hi, I recently started Butrans patch which seems to be helping except I can't get it to stay on properly even with the tagaderm covers. First off under my armpit was not good, so I tried the other side and the same thing they wrinkle. The left upper chest worked great when it was time for the right it was different couldn't get it to stay on flat. Could it be that it's hot and I move around a lot so I sweat idk. I just want it to lie flat and stay put like the first 2 times I applied it. Any suggestions? ## Yes, sweating or the excess skin oil that can occur due to heat may be contributing to the problem. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, d...

Hi my dad aged 81 has been on butrans and stepped them up as advised by the doctor until he reach 25....this made him very sleepy so he took the patches off and has now for over a week suffered what i can only describe as cold turkey....has anyone any idea how long this will last ## How long was he on them? Depending on the length of time, it may take a few weeks for the withdrawal effects to wear off. As listed by the FDA, they may include nausea, fever, chills, diarrhea and rebound pain. Has he considered going back on them, but at a lower dose? It's an option he could discuss with his doctor.

I was on Fentanyl 25mcg for one month. My doctor is switching me to a Butrans patch 15mcg. He says it is too short of a time to get withdrawals. How long do I wait before I use the Butran after taking off the Fentanyl ? Thank you. ## Hello, Sue! How are you? I'm afraid that I must disagree with your doctor on that, because Fentanyl is a very potent opiate, so you may still experience some withdrawals. Additionally, the Buprenorphine in the Butrans may cause you to go into precipitated withdrawals, if you start it too soon. Usually you need to wait until you're in full withdrawal, before starting it. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth a...

Am on methadone 5mg daily now doctor wants me to take butrans patch for severe back and nerve pain. Can i take them both or will i get sick? How long do i have to stop methadone before starting the butrans patch? ## Hello, Lily! How are you? No, you usually can't take anything else with the Butrans, because the Buprenorphine in it tends to cling stronger to your opiate receptors and prevent other opiates from having any effect. And unless your doctor has specified otherwise, you need to be in full withdrawal from the Methadone, before starting the Butrans, otherwise, it may throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals due to the way it takes over the opiate receptors. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may...

I am currently on a 10mg Butrans patch and also norco for break through pain. I got off track on taking the norco's because I was having some really bad pain and it was the only way I could get relief (big mistake) because in 10 days I have an appointment with my pain management doctor and because I am having breakthrough pain now with nothing to take. If he decides to run a UA how is it going to affect the outcome?

I had a 5 mcg patch for one week..no good I have had a 10mcg patch for 3 days..still have pain but have side affects badly I want to stop using them. Please give me a run down on how to come off slowly: as in.. can I replace the 10 with a five , for how long, what next ## Hello, Graham! How are you? How long have you been using any type of opiate pain relief, such as this? If you've been taking opiates for a long period of time, then you'll likely need to taper very slowly to minimize the possible withdrawal symptoms and rebound effects, as directed by the FDA. However, if this is the first one you've tried and you've not been on it for that long, you won't need such a long, gradual taper. The FDA lists this as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to b...

I was recently prescribed Butrans patches, 10 mg. and they are to remain on for 7 days at a time. What no one told me, and this is important, as HOT baths help my pain, when patches and pills don't quite do it, is that a hot bath can cause the patch to release more medicine than is safe or intended, and can result in death. I take the Norco 10s 3x day instead of 4, because the Butrans is supposed to help fill in. I do not want to risk my life for pain control, but pain is the one thing I can't control by myself. What would be a good solution to that patch? I wore one for 7 days before I found out how dangerous it is. I need my hot baths, so now what can I do? I take ibuprofen for the inflammation, also. ## Hello, Shuri! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you'r...

was on 5mg Norco 3x's a day, was put into pain management, put on 5mg butrans patch, little or no relief, first script, patches kept falling off, even with tegedern tape, second script, open to get a patch, there was none in there. Have fibro and back issues. I got 3 free patches from manufacture, but who will believe this missing patch. Can't believe I am the only one having issues with this patch. ## Hi Bessan, Sorry to hear about your challenges with the butrans patch. With all the effort you went through to make this work, only to come out with no relief, it sounds to me like it may not be worth the trouble. When you mentioned that there was no patch in the second script are you saying that they left you completely empty handed at the pharmacy? I haven't heard of that ha...

I Started Butrans 10mg. patches & Nurotin 2 weeks ago. I was on Vicodin for years and only took it 2x's a day. Once in the am and then at bed time. I stopped taking the Vicodin cold turkey because I didn't think I would have any problems. I have been so sick with nausea, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. These are some of the side affects in both the new medicines I am taking. I took the patch off for a day and still took the nurotin and the feeling got bad again with the nurotin. Im not sure what to do. The doctor says that the patches usually don't make you sick. and help out there would be greatly appreciated. ## Hello, Patty! How are you? The patches can cause those side effects, when your doctor says 'usually' it means that they've not experienced it with...

Hi there, I've been looking online for information on how to get off the butrans patch (5mg) I have been on now for about 3 years. I was placed on this due to a spinal infection and the lingering affects due to nerves thereof - a general diagnosis has been possible lyme/west nile - whatever it is/was - I am still (4 yrs. later numb from the knees down - numbness is intermittent and moves about from knees down to feet). Still on a walker as whatever this was took out my left leg in particular however my right leg is fine. It's been a trip - but I'll beat it - darn if I won't. All said, though and back to topic - has anyone any suggestions on how to "get off" this butran's patch - the lowest dose ? Can I just take the darn thing off and ride it out or is this d...
