I have some Buspirone that expired in 2008. Is it still ok to take this if I'm having some anxiety? ## Hello, Calvin! This medication is not listed by the FDA as becoming dangerous, once expired, but it does start to lose effectiveness, so in my opinion it would actually be best to dispose of it and see your doctor for a new prescription. However, according to the following article (listed below) from NIH, “the expiration date doesn't really indicate a point at which the medication is no longer effective or has become unsafe to use”, and is more of an arbitrary date based on the whit and whim of the pharmaceutical companies’ product “guarantee” that the labeled potency will last “at least” until that date. The article also goes on to not...

Has anyone had a bad reaction like I recently experienced? I was super stressed out and normally I take ativan for my anxiety, but was out and have been for a few months since I want to change doctor. Instead I had some of the teva 54 buspirone and a klonopin and I was so stressed about leaving my apt but really wanted to go to an event with a friend. So I took the buspirone and I blacked out and woke up in bed. Didn't remember a thing after taking it but I was ready to walk out the door. My friend tells me we never went to the event because I was lookin for something in our dumpster and when he asked if I wanted to go I told him I was doing something. This is so embarrassing and disappointing etc... As you can imagine. I have had the medication before and slept a lot and remember t...

Please help me identify it. ## If it’s small like a grain of rice has a line down the middle on one side and the number is 860 on the other side it is the “Buspirone 5 mg” generic for “Buspar.”

Do the pills have the same purpose or side effects? Do they look alike? They're both white & break into parts. ## They can both be used to treat anxiety, but they are not in the same class of medications. Buspirone is classified by the FDA as an anxiolytic, but Xanax is a Benzodiazepine that is used to treat panic disorders, anxiety, and some forms of insomnia, it also carries the risk of being habit forming, though Buspirone does not. Other side effects may be similar and include nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, and drowsiness. Are there any markings on the tablets in question? What shape are they?

The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, sedation, and dizziness. It is not a medication that is habit forming, or something that is normally abused, so the side effects really describe how it might make you feel, though they tend to wear off in about 4 to 6 weeks. If you have heart palpitations and your doctor give you Buspirone to help with your panic attacks, will it help with your heart palpitations? Or will it cause more heart palpitations? ## According to FDA reports, it has actually been known to cause palpitations as a side effect. Thus, in your case, I think it really depends on what's causing your palpitations, if you experience them due to panic attacks, the medication might help, if it works for you to get them under control. But there is also a chance that it may not stop them from occurring. However, most side effects are transient and tend to go away, once your body gets used to a medication, which could take 4 to 6 weeks. Are you on any other medications? Is there some other reason for your palpitations, or just the panic attac...

My prescription of Buspirone HCL 15 mg tablets, says to take 1 tablet 3 times a day. Does that mean take 45 mg (the whole bar) a day or 5 mg (15 mg a day)? ## Hi Chase, From my own interpretation of your prescription, I'm led to assume that it means you would be taking three 15mg tablets a day (totaling 45mg after your last dose). That translates to dosing every 8 hours within a 24hr period. If the instructions still don't make sense, I'd encourage you to contact your prescribing doctor and/or the local pharmacy who dispensed this medication just to be on the safe side. I hope this helps!
