Brintellix & Depression Day 5

Updated

My doctor has started me on Brintellix 10mg as I have tried a number of well known antidepressants over the years & found none give me complete remission. I suffer with MDD & Anxiety, which I believe stems from PTSD. I found that when we found one that worked, by 6 months I had built a resistance to it & it was no longer effective. They also made me gain weight which only added to feelings of self loath.

I am on day 5 with Brintellix. I had ceased all antidepressants at least 4 weeks before commencing this treatment. Day 1: I was extremely sick with anxiety prior to my taking the Brintellix. I did feel nausea about 40-50mins after but I felt it take the edge of the anxiety. Day 2: nausea persisting but bearable. Yucky taste in my mouth, did start salivating soon after taking second pill. Eyes and nose abit watery. Crackling sound in my sinus at night. Day 3: persistent yucky taste in my mouth and nausea-bearable. Losing appetite. Day 4: feeling more depressed, but there are big things happening in my personal life. Feeling agitated at night. Can't sleep, but struggle with that previously. Feelings of panic at bed time in response to negative thoughts. Not so emotional, have better control over overwhelming emotions. Feeling abit Blah/flat. Day 5: feeling depressed, empty, flat, no energy or desire to do anything. Want to be alone. Low grade nausea in background but not struggling with it. My mind feels different, abit aloof, but no increased therapeutic benefit experienced as yet. Is helping me smoke cigarettes less. I find the taste so yucky I only have half a smoke, with longer periods of time in between.

I wondering if I should be feeling more depressed at day five? If this is normal and if I should persist? I'm particularly concerned that I may become dependent on this medication once it has started fully working, and what the long term side effects will be for me. But when I go off antidepressants, by 3 months I relapse and am in need of some kind of medication to help me cope. I have had a series of big knocks throughout my life, especially from 16 years to current. I'm 34. I've lost a lot of the fight in me to want to continue living, but my four children need me, so I want to get better for them. I won't be seeing my doctor until another week and 2 days. Should I keep pressing on? Will there be relief soon?

It can take several weeks for this medication to reach its full level of efficacy in your body. Such side effects should improve, once your body gets used to it, but that may take 4 to 5 weeks. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA may also include nausea, headache, mood swings and weight changes.

How are you doing? Has there been any change?

Thank you for your reply. At about day 5 until day 13, I was spiraling down so fast and bad I ended up in the hospital twice with feelings/thoughts of self harm and suicide. Was told to stay on the meds a few more days, and at the beginning of week two, have slowly begun improving. I'm not experiencing the despair etc I was feeling only a few days ago. I was told it can take 4 to 6 weeks for brintellix to start its therapeutic effect. I will be patient. Was also experiencing negative memory recall of past events during this time which added to being so overwhelmed emotionally. No nausea reported. Appetite is hard to quench, get quite hungry. But I am spending less time mentally paralyzed in bed. Still panicky at bed time, but using CBT.
