Brintellix And Migraines

Updated

My wife has been on Brintellix/Trintellix for nearly a year now with great results. No other anti-depressant has been as effective in treating her symptoms. However, she has also suffered from migraines over the years, and she is not allowed to take the triptans that she used to take (Maxalt, etc.). Normally the Excedrin Migraine (acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine) has been enough, but this most recent one was bad enough to require a trip to urgent care and a shot of a narcotic painkiller. Any suggestions on what migraine meds she can talk to her doctor about?

Topamax, works awesome for me, it's cool once you get past the brain fog, and the weight loss.

Hello, Patrick! How is your wife doing?

Fioricet might also be another option to try, if her doctor approves. I didn't find any interactions listed between it and her Trintellix in the NIH databases. It contains Acetaminophen, Butalbital and Caffeine, there is also a formulation available that contains Codeine.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, and insomnia.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I take Brintellix and Zoning nasal spray. Suspect Brintellix might be making the migraines worse, though.

I take Cambia (diclofenac potassium) at the first sign of a migraine and it's been a miracle drug for controlling my migraines and keeping me functional. There are no contraindications with Trintellix/Brintellix, which is one of the primary reasons my doctor chose this antidepressant. If your wife hasn't yet tried Cambia, it's worth a go. When my neurologist first had me try it, I thought 'no way could a powder anti-inflammatory help.' I had devastating migraines that weren't controlled by normal migraine meds, and I would end up in bed for 2-3 days at a time at least twice a month. It's been 3 years, and I've had perhaps 2 devastating migraines since starting Cambia - both times the migraines occurred in the middle of the night, so I just didn't get the medication in my system fast enough. No, I don't work for the maker of Cambia, but if they offered me a salary-free job promoting their drug I would do it (joking, I have a day job). But seriously - I tell everyone about it!
