Blood Thinners-dangerous

Updated

In general blood thinners just seem dangerous to me. I had a PE six months ago and was on Xarelto for the duration of six months recommended by my doctor. She stated the treatment would be about six months. Well after going in yesterday for a follow-up my clots are gone with a little bit of scar tissue but my d-dimer test was a little low and she wants me to continue on thinners. I have taken myself off of them for two weeks now because I just did not enjoy the effects. Xarelto caused me a lot of excessive bleeding during my monthly cycle, I became dizzy, and my stomach bloated up something strange. I felt like I aged in a matter of six months losing a lot of my hair and skin just looks bad and old. Before this happened I did not look like that. I also lost most of my hair during the six months of treatment with tons coming out in the brush every-day. I never had this issue before and always had really thick hair my whole life. I explained this to her and now she wants me taking Eloquis which I am not too happy with because I know it may cause the same types of issues. I feel as though one way or another you are doomed. I think these drugs are to be used short term depending on your issues but long term use just doesn't seem as though there are any benefits and the risk may outweigh the benefits. I have read that they do not even really break clots or actually prevent them 100% either so does that mean you are poisoning yourself for no reason? Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm not a doctor so of course I don't have all the data or information on patient outcomes and there is tons of information out there about all these medications. I know many doctors are quick to prescribe whatever the pharm companies are selling at their office. I'm not big on medications at all for the simple reason that it is never a cure but just prolongs so many problems or makes it worse. I do not want to down the doctors or the medical profession by any means because they do a lot of great things for people but I am concerned about these drugs in general. Too many people are on them and that raises a red flag. It just seems we have more people dependent on these drugs and less effort being made to actually treat and find cures to end some of the health issues out there. This is my opinion only and I do not want to influence anyone from following the orders of their physician. I am just letting you know my own personal experience.

Sadly enough, in many cases, pharmaceuticals don't create cures, they create customers. It is almost like they aren't interested in actual cures, anymore, because once someone is cured, their profits end.

I'm not saying this applies to all companies and all medications, but it is a valid point.

Some medications are necessary and it is always best to take your doctor's advice, but you should never be afraid of being your own advocate and asking any questions you feel are relevant.

And yes, most of the medications that prevent clotting can cause the same types of side effects, which the FDA lists as also possibly including headaches, easy bruising, nausea and menstrual pain.

Has anyone else had similar experiences on these medications?

I am also at the six month mark and gearing up to go off xeralto. I had vascular surgery and a month later had massive P.E. in both lungs, heart and abdomen. I was in ICU for 7 days and a further 7 on the medical floor due to a bug I picked up called pneumonia.... Hair loss to the extreme I am wondering if it will come back. Also 30 lb weight gain, headache and blurred vision, swelling, burning, stomach upsets, yes, I seem to have every known side effect possible. In desperation I started to take a natural diuretic containing herbs that I normally cook with and that gets things moving and helps with the swelling. My nurse practitioner agreed that it is less harmful then a lasix treatment.

I hate the drug. I never know what symptom I will be plagued with on a daily basis. The medical profession are dismissive when it comes to drugs. I empathize with you!
