Hello all......I have Ocular Toxoplasmosis that requires rather high Prednisone treatments. The last time I took it - 2013 - I had high blood pressure - 180/100. This is a scary side effect and I am very afraid that now that I have a recurrence of the Toxo and have had to start Pred again that the BP will shoot up. Has anyone experienced increased side effects the longer you are on Prednisone or should I just expect the same?

Hello, ASed! How are you?

There's really no way to predict anything with high doses of steroids. Elevated blood pressure is a normal side effect, it can also elevate your heart rate, cause insomnia, fluid retention and acne, as listed by the FDA.

One thing you could do is ask your doctor about possibly taking a blood pressure medication while you're taking the Prednisone, if you're going to be on it for awhile.

Are you on any other medications? What are your normal blood pressure levels?

Verwon, Thank you for your reply, it was helpful. So far, so good. I'm taking 60mg per day at the moment, down from 80mg. My pressure has been good, but it is good to know that I can take (or request to take) BP meds if the reaction happens again.

I'm a healthy, really active 45 y/o with a normal BP 120/70, RHR 55. Hoping not to have to continue the treatment past a couple of weeks.
