Bad Rash, Hives But Unsure Of The Connection

I'm unsure of the origin of my rash and hives. I'm at the end of week 3 of contrave. About 10 days ago, I fell on the basketball court and broke my foot and tore ligaments. I have an aspirin allergy (hives), so the ER doc was hesitant to prescribe 500 mg aleve, but I've taken OTC aleve and had no problems. Day 2 I broke out in a neck to ankle rash. I stopped the Aleve. Day 3 it was swollen and itchy. For a week I used Rx steroid ointment to get rid of the rash. Finally mostly went away. Didn't use the ointment for one day and I broke out with huge hives. Large 6" welts are all over me and much worse than the original rash. I can't imagine it's leftover from the aleve since it's a week later. I upped to 3 Contrave when I got the rash (but also started taking high aleve doses). Is rash and awful hives a common side effect? I see it's listed, but how common is this type of reaction?

Hello, Lexi! How are you doing? Has anything changed?

The rash and hives are listed as being fairly common side effects by the FDA, which means generally anywhere from 1 to 10% of people tend to experience them from Contrave.

Other side effects may include dizziness, headache, insomnia and sweating.

Have you consulted your doctor? You may need to switch to a different medication, or perhaps go back to the lower dosage.

Thanks for the reply. My doc is calling his pharmaceutical rep to get more info. He had me stop the Contrave for now (I was about to up to 4 doses/day). I'm on a pill form steroid now. Day 2 of that and I keep breaking out in hives. The itching and pain is unbearable. I'm using ice packs to help and have to change those out every 2 hours. How long does it take for contrave to leave the system?

Hi, Yes, hives after three weeks of a lose dose of Contrave. Today I went on steroids. I am hoping the horrible hives go away soon. No more Contrave for me!
