I'm getting a colon test done and can’t take blood thinners. Is Atorvastatin or Felodipine a blood thinner? Should I stop taking them prior to my test? ## Hello Ann, Technically no, neither medication is a blood thinner. According to DailyMed Atrovastatin is a medication to lower cholesterol and Felodipine is used to treat high blood pressure by blocking calcium and relaxing blood vessels. Despite this both medications caution you to not take this medication prior to surgery. I strongly advise you contact your doctor to see if and when you should stop taking this medication.

I have been taking the atorva 20 mg for the past 20 months, but the price is very high. Please advise me a low price alternative that's similar. ## I'm not sure where you are located to know what else is available for you to use. However, Atorva contains the active ingredient Atorvastatin, it used to help lower cholesterol, so you could try asking your pharmacist/chemist if there is a generic available. There are also several other Statin class medications on the market, so you could speak to your doctor and see if there is one that is available as a generic that you could use instead of the Atorva. Are there any other questions? ## My father got bypass surgery for his heart. He used Atorva 20 which is very costly. He may try Atarex 25 instead of Atova 20. Are both the same medi...

I currently take atorvastatin for my cholesterol. Is it safe to start taking Turmeric for the inflammation of my arthritis? Is atorvastatin a blood thinner? ## No it is not a blood thinner, it is used solely to help lower cholesterol levels, although some recent studies have shown that elevated cholesterol levels are not as dangerous as we think, but many disagree, thus the jury is still out on that, so to speak. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle aches. As to taking it with Turmeric, I haven't been able to find any studies on that, but since it is used in many foods, I'd think the FDA would warn you if there was a problem. However, it is always best to double check with your doctor to be sure. It is also be...

I am on 80 mg of Atorvastatin. Can I safely start cutting my doses to 40 for a week or two, then half the 40 for a week or two, then half the 20, then get off without the extreme side effects? ## Hi Terry, Generally, it's best to discuss tapering protocols with your prescribing doctor in order to mitigate possible risk factors (e.g. rebound effects or withdrawal symptoms). However, as a last resort, and because only you know your body and how it responds to Atorvastatin, my opinion is that your current approach certainly seems feasible. Since Atorvastatin is used to treat high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, simply changing your diet (staying away from foods that raise those numbers) should theoretically yield noticeable results in and of itself. Unfortunately no one can accura...

Hello. I have been taking lipvas (atorvastatin) tablets for the past nine months and my daily dose is 10mg. I got checked for my cholesterol levels and all parameters are within the safe zone. Shall I stop taking this medication? ## You should not stop it, without your doctor's approval. The NIH lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle aches. The medication may be the only thing keeping it down and preventing future medical problems. Are you on any other medications? ## I had diabetes and an old stroke case for which the doctor prescribed Carbamazepine, Atorvastatin, and an Asprin tablet. Now my BP and sugar levels are somehow ok. So, can I stop taking these meds?
