What medications are the most prescribed anxiolytics? Is there a list I can refer to? I am also interested in the differences in prescribing between countries.
Any ideas Verwon?

Hmmm.....I'm thinking.

Usually, prescription drug sales are broken down by year, so I think you'd really have to look at one of the top 100 or top 200 lists and then just comb through for the ones used for anxiety.

All of the relevant lists for 2011 are up by now, it will be a long time before any for 2012 are available, so I'd suggest starting with the 2011 top prescribed drugs lists.

As to how to sort by country and find the differences there, I'm sorry, but I am not aware of a way to do that. Many countries don't keep records that are up to date and accurate, so it's very hard to break the details down that way.

Another problematic factor is that not all countries require prescriptions for the same medications, so that makes it very difficult, as well.

Is there a particular category that you're curious about, such as Benzodiazepines or the newer anxiolytics?

Certainly not buspirone, which has no effect whatever; SSRIs make me ten times worse than normal; si I guess we're talking benzodiazepines, meprobamate, medium acting barbiturates etc. I currently get prescribed 4 x 2.5mg tabs LORAZEPAM and 3 x 2mg CLONAZEPAM daily, which is an improvement on my old 4 x 10mg DIAZEPAM, but not nearly as effective as ALPRAZOLAM, which not only helped the constant anxiety but also my IBS, and was much more.likely to allow me a good night's sleep whilst not making me drowsy in daytime like diazepam, even at that small dosage, which made me constantly nod off. However the clonazepam I now get is much more effective as a combination anti epileptic and prophylactic for panic attacks than the carbamazepine I got with the Xanax brand of alprazolam. My doctor stipulates the Roche brand of clonazepam; however that particular benzodiazepine is, according to the BNF and despite its obvious excellent and powerful action in panic management, only indicated as a second-line treatment for Status.Epilepticus. I am also interested in the possibilities of long half life BZDs used as hypnotics as qds anxiolytics. Temazepam and quazepam both have the qualifications, having half lives similar to oxazepam. Neither has ever helped my insomnia but I have noticed pronounced anxiolysis. Trouble is, quazepam is almost impossible to find, as is temazepam in the only effective form, oral solution or liquid filled soft gelcaps.

The other big question is, why did the UK NHS first delete the only really useful alprazolam strengths, 1 & 2mg, then take it off the NHS List, making it private prescription only, at the highest Xanax 500mcg price I've seen, therefore making the UK a diazepam dependent society? Because of that policy, and reluctance to prescribe 2.5mg lorazepam, the best NHS anxiolytic available, 90% of people being treated for anxiety are in a constant state of torpor and mental dullness, characteristic of diazepam even in low dose. This in a country where they are most likely to be washed down with high alcohol, high caffeine tonic wine! Wikipedia "Buckfast Tonic Wine" & see what you get. Or Google it + "Scotland" & you may be shocked at our last couple of generations, brought up in a post-industrial wasteland with those plus the ubiquitous heroin, of which Scotland is a major, major consumer. So much for Brigadoon, what?
But I do get my lorazepam and am not a drinker. I just wonder what gets consumed for anxiety where and in what dosages? South Africa is a diaz and alpraz place, as is Serbia, where Ksalol and Bensedin or Apaurin are prescribed in roughly equal prescriptions. They have a massive problem just now with teenagers having discovered the joys of snorting Jurnista hydromorphone along with 30mg of Flormidal, the finest brand of the incredibly strong hypnotic midazolam, which is now a Sch III CD in the UK and confined to sedation by 5mg injection IV at dentists and in hospitals. The only other BZD controlled thus is temazepam.
I have reasons for wishing to know these things, reasons sociological.

Klonopin originally WAS marketed as a "second-line" drug for Status Epilepticus. I should know. I was there.
