Androgel Causes Homosexual Urge In Husband

My 50 year old husband has been on Android gel replacement therapy for 2 years. Within 6 months of starting the treatment he became a changed man. He purchased a rubber sex toy, started looking at gay porn on the internet, and our sex life basically stopped. Just recently I found that he had placed a personal ad for sex with a man. During all this time he had become aggressive mean and quick to anger. I filed for divorce, and when I confronted him he broke down. He was never like this before the androgel therapy. We are trying to reconcile, and I am doing research on the connection between androgel and latent homosexual urges in straight men. Is there any research out there concerning this link, and are there any other men out there who have experienced this while on androgel therapy?

I've been in Androgel for 8 years and have not taken up with men nor do I fantasize about male sex. I have found that my moods are tremendously better than they were when my t levels were low, I have more stamina and energy and my mind is clearer. I feel like a healthy male whereas before I felt like a tired lump. I do feel horny more than I did before, but I express those needs heterosexually no differently than when I was younger and had naturally high t and I am responsible and have a happy marriage. Do I wish my wife also had the same level of hornieness that I now do, most definitely. But I am responsible and do not let the hormones rule my actions. I may feel like a twenty something, but am not. I expect that as your husbands hormone levels recovered, something else that had been buried, came alive along with him. I wouldn't blame it one the Androgel. I would attribute it that he felt more like an totally alive male, not one with damper on him and his fantasies let loose. I am sorry of the impact on your marriage. The fact that he broke down when confronted my this, to me indicates that he has an emotional struggle going on as to his sexuality. I wish you both well.

Thank you Jeff. We are still trying to get past this. He claims now that he has no recollection of what he did. He is trying to be a better husband, but it is difficult.

When was the last time he had a full lab work up? I reread your post and wonder if he had an abnormal swing in hormones. The aggression could definitely be a spike in testosterone and the breaking down could be the levels going in the other direction. Think puberty revisited. Again, I wouldn't blame Androgell as a drug, but it does deliver testosterone, which whether natural or chemical can effect the male body and mind just as estrogen swings can with women, I didn't have any difficulty getting adjusted to Androgel but I also had done tons of research and knew that low T was a side effect of a med I've taken for decades. I've also learned to be tuned into my body and am followed by an endocrinologist who also tracks other factors. Does your husband know why his T levels are low? If not it could be useful for him to try to dig in to find out. So many things play off each other in the body. Good luck.

Jeff, as a diabetic, his labs are done every three months. He was suffering from low energy and no libido. Endo put him on the Androgel. After this incident, he stopped using it. He is still tired but he is not aggressive and not angry all the time..

I've heard diabetes does nasty things to the body. Is the endo watching just numbers for diabetes or also testosterone? How is his weight? That can be a factor. there are other testosterone options that may work better and he could start a lower doses so as to avoid the aggressiveness. From my experience I needed to be pretty persistent and sometime very graphic with my primary doc and endo about how I felt physically and wanted answers. Initially it was very awkward and sometimes uncomfortable with my primary who is male about my age and endo who is younger and female. They were looking at just the numbers and the statistics and I was pushing quality of life. They both learned to appreciate my newfound directness and were willing to work with me. I share my experience incase this could help your husband not just get treated but improve his quality of life. If he hasn't had a blunt conversation with his docs about his Androgel experience, I hope he would,

Darling, that's because he was always gay. But now giving him his natural sex hormone (Testosterone) now he feels who he really is. You don't just "turn" gay. You're always that way from birth. He was just told to hide himself his entire life. Sorry you have to find out this way.
