Amrix 15 /hyperparathyroidism

Updated

I was on regular Flexeril for a while. Then was on Soma til it stopped working. Was just prescribed 15mg of Amrix at bedtime. Since starting I have been diagnosed with Hyperthoroidism as I have lost 70lbs in the last 10 months. Was in hospital, testing n procedures for possible stomach cancer. That was negative, thank God! However, now the contraindications for Amrix is pts with overactive thyroid (Hyperparathyroidism) shouldn't take it. That's ALL I can find!! Can anyone PLEASE tell me why that is? What would happen if I continued to take it? I'm not, and now need to call pain mgmt with this new diagnosis. I have RA, ankylosing spondylitis, herniated discs, fibromyalgia and other conditions. Can anyone give some solid answers? Thank you so much.

Hello, NewLeaf! How are you?

From what I have been able to find, it's due to the effects that the medication can have on your blood pressure and heart rate, which might be dangerous to someone that can already experience elevation of both due to being Hyperthyroid.

Typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache and dry mouth.

Are you on a medication for your thyroid?

I'm doing well Verwon.. Thank you for asking and getting back.
I've lost 65 lbs in the last 6 months. I had stomach biopsies for stomach cancer which were negative. Thank God. It turned out to be my thyroid. When I was 202lbs, my BP was high, but since losing weight, it's now normal. I was on metoprolol for BP after hydrochlorothyazide didn't work.
I suffer from migraines for almost 40 yrs (since age 8). However, the Amrix gave me a headache like I've never had before... I was thinking stroke or aneurysm.
Since newly diagnosed with HT, I have not yet started treatment. I recd the diagnosis after I was prescribed the amrix. Thank you for the info. I was so scared when this headache hit.

You are very welcome, I'm happy to help in any way I can.

As to the headaches, I'd also suggest checking your blood pressure, whenever they hit, just to be sure. I was getting migraines for years and it was never caught that they were occurring due to random blood pressure spikes.

Please post back and keep my updated!

Would u happen to know treatment for hyperactive thyroid?
I'm on fiorinal with codeine for migraines. Also other pain meds for ankylosing spodilitis, with herniated and bulging discs, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and ulcerative colitis. Now the thyroid thing. Never had a prob with weight til last year when I was on steroids. Now off n lost almost 70lbs.
Is the thyroid something to really worry about? I know I need to see an endocrinologist.

Your thyroid affects other hormones and their balances in your body.

For instance, many women with thyroid problems might have irregular periods, it can also cause a poor ability to tolerate the cold, weight gain and extreme fatigue. All of which can be problematic if you're working, or raising a family. An iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypo.

It's usually treated with either Levothyroxine or Liothyronine, which replace the missing thyroid hormones. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, weight changes and hair loss.

Are there any other questions or concerns?

Thanks again!!
I actually have Hyper not Hypo.... I'm 47 went thru menopause at 40, and have lost weight 65lbs in the last 4 months. I was up to 202 because of the prednisone I was on for a while. (I've never had a weight problem) so, to lose the weight was great, but not the way it happened. I was losing 5-7 lbs every 3-4 days. I actually lost a total of 75 but have had to force myself to eat and as a result, put 10 back on. I was way too thin. I just wasn't sure what to expect as far as treatment. Waiting for autho from ins co for specialist. So instead of confusing myself by googling it, I thought I'd ask on a forum. You've been a great help Verwon!! I really appreciate you getting back to me. It means a lot!

You're very welcome. I'm glad I was able to help.

With hyper, you're producing too much of the relevant hormones, rather than not enough. So, it's basically the opposite of hypo.

In this case, it depends what causes it, sometimes it might be due to an inflammation of the thyroid gland and the treatment depends on that, but most commonly antithyroid drugs are used, or beta blockers.
