Amoxicillin Rash - How Long?
UpdatedMy 6 year old had a possible allergic reaction to amoxicillin. We stopped giving her the medication after only 2 doses. However, 2 days after stopping the medication, her rash is not only not going away, it is intensifying and spreading. Is this normal? What should I do to help alleviate the rash and itching? I have been giving her Benadryl regularly.

Hi Lori,
Sorry to hear about your child's reaction to Amoxicillin. According to NIH.gov, this is indicative of an allergic reaction. However, it may be that the antibiotic is still trying to find its way out of her system. NIH goes on to note that the half-life of Amoxicillin is 61.3 minutes....Further, approx. 60% of an orally administered dose of amoxicillin is said to be excreted in the urine within a period of 6 to 8 hours. This means that after only 2 doses it should be fully excreted by the second or third day off treatment. My theory is that due to her body's hypersensitive reaction, the metabolism and excretion of the drug and its fillers could've been drawn out... As far as treatment is concerned, this sounds like more of a waiting game until the drug is fully excreted and no longer wreaking havoc in her system. Lavender essential oil may be beneficial for rashes though... I hope she's gotten around to feeling better since the timing of your post!
Re: David (# 1)
Thank you for your reply. It ended up taking about a week for the rash to stop itching. It took another week or two for all the red spots and patches to fade. We took her to the doctor, and the doctor confirmed it was an allergic reaction. No more amoxicillin for our little girl!
I started taking amoxicillin about 1.5 weeks ago and I had a 500mg dose 3x a day. I noticed a very itchy rash all over my legs, stomach and chest about 3 days ago. So I stopped taking my amoxicillin and the rash has started to develop on my neck and arms. I am assuming I am allergic to amoxicillin but I have not had any trouble breathing. How long till my rash subsides? Should I go to a doctor?
