Amitriptyline For Nerve Pain

Updated

Has anyone had amitriptyline for nerve pain? I want to come off them, but I’m concerned the nerve pain will return. Has anyone had any experience with this?

There is a chance that the pain may return, if you stop abruptly, sudden withdrawal could result in a rebound effect, where they pain might be even worse than it was to begin with.

The NIH lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, mood changes, dry mouth, and weight changes.

Why do you want to stop taking them?

At the beginning I felt so pleased when the tablets kicked in. I started at 25 mg and eventually increased to 75 mg. All was going well. I get the usual side effects, but no real problems. I’ve been on them for about 6 years. The reason I want to come off, is because according to my optometrist the medication is increasing my eye pressure. I have decreased the dosage by 25 mg, which seems to have helped. I also take co-codamol 30mg when the pain is particularly bad. I think perhaps I should keep trying to reduce the dosage gradually and If the pain returns, I’ll start taking them again. I was hoping someone might have done the same.

Dangerous drug..I was prescribed, because I had a bad reaction to gabipinton. 50 mg per day for pain. Put me in such a fog,& my body never adjusted to it. Weight gain was significant 30 lb in 2 months. Side effects aren't worth it! I couldn't wake up,& I would sleep until 4:00 pm. It nearly destroyed my marriage, & when I weaned myself off my hair started falling out in handfuls! Dry mouth was like being in the desert,& affected my teeth..Don't take this medication it's horrible, & I can't express enough what a toll it put my physical health in turmoil.
