Allergic Reactions To Cipro

Updated

Anyone besides me having issues after having taken Cipro? Was discontinued by my doctor after 3 days. I have burning sensation in my hands and legs. Soon afterward, going up the stairs, I felt the innermost part of my knee begin to hurt. Ignored it until it became harder to do. Returned to the doctor who ordered an xray. No bone involvement. Appt with orthopedist tomorrow. Tried to wear a support bandage but makes it worse.

Hi Bonita,

Sorry to hear about your experience with being on Ciprofloxacin. From what I could find, "pain in the joints" is in fact listed as a rare but potentially serious side effect on the site for the US National Library of Medicine; in which case they recommend contacting your doctor immediately...

Further warning labels mention that Ciprofloxacin has been also known to increase your risk of developing tendinitis as well as tendon rupture during your treatment and even for up to several months afterwards. Hearing about your knee pain makes me think of this as something that could potentially escalate overtime...

I don't actually see anything relating to a burning sensation mentioned on the drug monograph, but I do suspect that it could be a sign of an allergic reaction, like you stated in your thread title. With that said, it's possibly that your doctor may end up suggesting another form of treatment after evaluating the condition and severity of these symptoms you're having.

I hope this info helps and wish you a speedy recovery! This antibiotic is definitely no joke!

Thanks David. Yes, my doctor discontinued the Cipro, and my left knee tendon/ligament appears to be torn, per the orthopedist. I found a blog entitled, Surviving Cipro. Lots of info and several people sharing their stories. I had taken the 250mg before but this was the first time any doctor had prescribed the 500mg dosage. I mentioned my concern about possible side effects when he suggested I take that, but the doc kind of joked about it. I won't be taking it again, that's for sure. Thanks again!

I had a reaction to one pill, extreme anxiety and it's been 3 days. I took antihistamine drank lots of water and went to do a Ozone/Oxygen therapy session. I feel so much better and the anxiety has gotten better. I would recommend the Ozone/Oxygen therapy because it detox's the body of that poison. Hope this helps you.

Thanks, Ladybug. Glad that helped you. ... if only I could get a doctor to agree to it. Right now I have a severe tendon tear near my knee. Will begin PT for that next week.

Wanda: It may not be the CIPRO you're allergic to. It could be the manufacturer's INACTIVE ingredients. I have always taken Cipro. Never had a single problem. Always got Cipro from Pack Pharma. Last night, I was given a prescription from Northstar Pharma. I took just ONE Cipro (250 mg) and almost died. I had gotten a severe headache after 15 minutes followed by a racing heart (118 bpm--resting heart rate), and then had trouble breathing. I called the Pharmacy, but they never picked up the phone. Called Poison Control and texted my doc. Will NEVER take another generic drug from Northstar. Just know that ALL GENERICS ARE DIFFERENT. Check it out and look it up on the internet. Some companies only distribute the generic drugs. Sun Pharma actually gets their generic drugs from India, Pakistan, and Iran. The plants in India were shut down for shipping out CONTAMINATED DRUGS (contaminated by dirty water leaking from the ceiling into the vats where the medications were being manufactured). So, before saying you're allergic to a drug, know this: you could be allergic to the INACTIVE ingredients by the MANUFACTURER! FDA is trying to get drugs cheaper by getting them from outside of this Country. Sorry; but, that's unacceptable to me. I even asked for the BRAND! Big Brother isn't allowing anyone to take BRAND DRUGS anymore. It's so sad that the pharmaceutical companies are willing to take the chance on a person's life just to save a few bucks. Either that, or they have been ORDERED to do this to Americans.

Just because you took Cipro in the past and didn't have any problems does not mean that if you take Cipro this time you won't have any problems. These drugs are extremely powerful chemotherapeutic agents, and the effects of taking them are cumulative. It sounds like you are unfamiliar with the serious side effects of these drugs, so please read the 'primer' on the Fluoroquinolone drugs below. Cipro is in the class of drugs called Fluoroquinolones.

So, take these drugs at your own risk. It does not matter what manufacturer they come from or how many times you've taken them without symptoms in the past. Each time you take them, you could be risking irreversible health issues, even disability and death. Do not trust that your doctor will tell you about these risks, because they most often do not know about them.
