Accutane Long Term Effects

Updated

I'm a 49 year old male who took accutane in the late 80's not too long after it's FDA approval. I took two heavy courses of accutane and it did stop the cystic part but I still had acne problems. I also noticed my body has acted different since I took accutane. I get the IBS out of the blue, then it goes away as quick as it starts. My skin goes through periods of the acne trying to return then stopping for a few months. Now I have suffered my 3rd clonic tonic siezure in 11 months, no family history of seizures, never had a seizure before, and I'm taking Keppra to keep seizures from happening. I knew taking massive doses of a synthetic vitamin could cause problems, but seizures, IBS, arthritis and this damn ringing in my ears, is too much......I'm on the older side of having taken accutane, and even though it somewhat worked, it has also failed to protect the rest of my health. That is the basis of our lawsuit....I'm your future if you took accutane....message me

I will be going back to the Doctor who gave me the Accutane. I'm curious what sort of song and dance I'm going to get when I tell her I'm starting a Class Action lawsuit against Roche Labs. I'm pissed now, and the clowns at Roche are gonna feel me, but good......a**holes, covering up the truth.....there's a special place in hell for money dogs like you.

I'm still here. And off all the dope. Feeling better than I have in 15 years. I stopped taking everything, vitamins, allergy stuff, and I watch for anything high in vitamin A. I also, drink a little cider vinegar....gross I know..but it neutralizes iodine and vitamin A.

Stevie,
I im having debilitating symptoms 1 yr later that come and go in waves. I am more and more convinced that Accutane was to blame.
You mentioned ACV, is there anything else you take? Joint, neck, and back pains are killing me now and im only 30. Doctors cant find anything after 10 blood tests. Nausea, dizziness, gastro problems, vision problems, brain fog... you name it.

If your still getting acne or blackheads, it's still active. I think all the meds for acne did was suppress my immune system. My acne persisted all this time and even spread to areas I never had acne..........BUT....a very interesting side effect of a med I was taking, it totally cleared my skin up....no acne of any kind at all....37 years I suffered with various forms of acne....and it went away in a month. My dermo freaked out when I told her what I did, but she can't believe how clear my skin is, and she is a fellow acne sufferer......I take flax seed for my joint pain....I was barely getting any symptoms at 30, they will just slowly get worse, and one day one of those dizzy spells will become a grand maul seizure. Only positive about it all, you'll probably never be fat.

Im already underweight... lost 30 lbs from these symptoms... so it wasn't so reassuring. Flax Seed... ill give it a try. I've also been told glucosamine, Diindolylmethane, and Hyaluronic Acid help certain symptoms... I've seen so many doctors in the last year... and still nothing... next stop endocrinology

I'm a 38 year old male. I take morphine sulfate for my bladder that's "cracked and bloody" according to the urologist who diagnosed me with Interstitial cystitis. Based on my symptoms and history another uro called the diagnosis chronic cystitis of the bladder(inflammation) with out taking a look inside. I took accutane in highschool 1993-94. My bladder symptoms started after I took the prescription. I was also diagnosed with IBS in 1997, but manage it with diet. I tried to work but am in debilitating pain of the bladder most of the time, but especially when I'm trying to sleep, and when I wake in pain and exhaustion from the REM sleep disorder the pain cause every day. I was approved my social security for disability in 2004. The foods I can now eat are a small percentage of foods most people can eat because of the low acid diet my doc out me on in 2011. The diet helps to keep the most intense flare ups but the pain is always a problem. By the way, this stuff is still prescribed under generics. Sue, I certainly will. A class for bladders would be pretty sweet. Thoughts about taking legal action?

I have experienced similar problems after taking Roaccutane. How did your lawsuit go?

I'm a 29 year old female. I took accutane when I was 18 and about 8 years later I developed Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Syndrome with symptoms out of the blue that made an active person suddenly bedridden from pain and fatigue. I had many tests and many doctors (up to 6) working on my case. Here's what they know: I don't have RA or Lupus. (I'm not too convinced in Fibromyalgia, since I have lower pain now in the past year). I gained 30lbs in 3 months on Cymbalta (for fibromyalgia) that's a nasty drug. And coming off it was a nightmare! I do not take any prescription medications. I take 8000IU Vitamin A for my cystic acne that has returned about a few years ago. Really around my jawline just a few huge cysts will appear. I take 65 mg of Iron for anemia and fatigue.I take COQ10 100mg daily and Magnesium 500mg daily. It helps. Magnesium is great for people with pain. I am about 50% back to normal. I still suffer from aches and pains (especially in lower back 3 slipped discs will do that) and SI Joint problems. I am still fatigued out of this world even with caffeine! (trying to quit to lose weight). I am back exercising and it feels good but the rebound can be bad and put me down for a few days. It's a touch and go thing. I do okay but I really have to listen to my body and each day I fight.

I just posted my post-accutane physical problems. I also took it in early 80's and I never thought it was related till i read someone else's post, but I too began having grand mal seizures at age 31.

Yes you will . You 'll be so damn depressed and anxious , that you'll self medicate with food to make yourself feel better . The anti depressants and anxiety meds will make you stack on the weight as well , sorry but it's a fact .

So sorry. My son had severe acne and took it several years ago for about a year. It worked and cleared him up. Now at 19 acne back and some other odd things. Lymph node swelling ( several lumps) he is seeing doc today. I don't think he has been the same happy kid since.. this is a harsh drug. He was carefully monitored, had few side effects. As his mom, I don't think I am getting the whole story on what he has experienced. I'm a nurse; I did many other things with txs to try to avoid this med. I wish you the best. My son is the world to me.

I have similar issues that they can't figure out. Anemia, they finally got under control. Fatigue that they said was from anemia but since it's leveled, fatigue is still there. My feet and legs hurt, all the time. Memory is lapsing.

Re: Harris (# 21) Expand Referenced Message

I'm sorry to hear you have the same problems as most.. my 19 year old daughter has been sick for almost 3 years now after accutane. It's awful and doctors keep misdiagnosing her.
It seems her body does not fight off infection like it should. One doctor called her immunocompromised. Have you been diagnosed with anything specific? Take care
