Abscessed Tooth Infection Cefdinir

Updated

I went to MedDirect early Monday morning crying I was in so much pain. I've had an abscessed tooth for a little over 6 months now, but financially we are barely making it paycheck to paycheck, so I haven't been able to get it pulled. They said it would be a couple hundred for just the x-ray, and $375 just to get that one tooth out. So, I couldn't get it done. I was crying Saturday and Sunday because of how bad it was, plus I also have scoliosis that I haven't been able to be seen for and I could barely move for three days prior to visit. I tell him my issues, he looks inside my mouth, prescribes me ibuprofen and was going to do penicillin, but Penicillin always makes me puke, Amoxicillin is fine though...which I told him, but he prescribes me Cefdinir 300mg, which was $90, so I had to go 5 days off of ibuprofen because I couldn't afford the Cefdinir. My pharmacist knows I am able to take Amoxicillin and that would be free, so she calls and asks if he could switch it, told him my situation, and he responds with no. I literally couldn't get out of bed for 4 days straight because I couldn't wake up, only enough to go to the bathroom, whenever I was awake I had the worst migraine that wouldn't go away, I actually still have it. Anyways, after taking the Cefdinir for 2 days I have received a cold sore(huge and swollen) on the center of my lip, along with 5 others inside of my mouth... Out of ibuprofen, and I didn't even get prescribed pain meds. Should I continue taking the Cefdinir? Is it suppose to be causing the cold sores?

Hello, Kristen! How are you feeling? I'm very sorry that you're in so much pain.

No, cold sores are actually caused by a herpes simplex virus. If that's what you have, then most likely being ill lowered your resistance, so the virus was able to flare up.

However, cold sores don't usually occur inside your mouth, just the outer area on, or near the lips. If you have sores in your mouth, then the antibiotic may have caused a yeast infection, which you'll need an antifungal to treat.

The FDA lists the typical side effects for Cefdinir as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

You really need to work something out to see a dentist and have the tooth taken care of, otherwise, it is just going to keep flaring up.

Are there any low-income dental clinics in your area?

Kristen, find a dentist who will let you use CARE CREDIT. They are iNTEREST-FREE for 6 months-2 years, depending on what you need done. Your dentists OFFICE can set up how much you need, AND how long for delayed interest.
*** IF YOU DO NOT PAY IT OFF BY THE TIME THEY EXTEND YOU INTEREST-FREE, You have to pay Interest from the BEGINNING.

I usually ask for about 6-months beyond when I can pay it OFF, in case of some other emergence (car issue?).

Hope this helps. You need to get this taken care of- it's critical, because if not, complications include SINUS INFECTION AND serious HEART Conditions!
