I have just started taking Abilify for severe anxiety and some depression. I am wondering if anyone has had problems with weight gain while using this medication. ## I have been on abilify for almost 2 years and have gained 25 lbs. I wish I knew why it caused weight gain. I never had problems with weight before. ## My Son has been using this med for about a year.. he is on several other meds and has had a big issue with weight gain and bowel issues.. seems he had an increase in bowel issues once he was on this med.. ## My Daughter had gained alot of weight since being on abilfy ## While Abilify is known to cause weight gain, as a side effect, in studies it was shown to be less frequent, and lower wait gains, than other comparable medications, generally 1-10pounds. ## I just started Abilify 2 months ago... what a trip it's been! At the beginning I started to hear voices, luckily they were my son and husband. (I called my shrink, no return call.) Then when I took a nap, I could hear them, I talked to them and saw them if I woke up quick. (I called my shrink, no return call.) I can't remember the easiest words during a conversation, and have to describe it. You know that round thing on your car that can pop, yeah tire! .... I'm calling to make an appointment to get my husband's, uh,um, TOOTH, ya, tooth pulled...as I am speaking with the Oral Surgeon's office. (Called my shrink, no return call.) Well this past weekend I was exausted. My husband, son's girlfriend and I took an hour drive to get some "new to us" furnitur...

Abilify has helped my depression but it has given me bad headaches on my left side. Not sure if I should keep taking it. I think I’ll cut it down and try that first. It does have a lot of side effects and affects my feelings of irritability. I have chronic migraines that are very severe on my right side along with my TMJ where I’ve had joint replacement. I would like to know what others have been dealing with while taking Abilify. ## While a headache can be a side effect of many medications, you should always inform your doctor to be sure that's all it is, for your own safety. The FDA lists other side effects of Abilify as possibly including nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, and vision changes. What other ones have you been experiencing? Hello, Has anyone experienced a relief in chronic pain while on Abilify. I am convinced it is this medication that relieved my chronic neck pain. This has given me the idea it might help my mother who is on a daily dose of morphine. I want to bring this up to her Dr but don't want to sound crazy. What do you think? Is it possible? ## Hello, Mila! How are you and your mom? It is not a recognized effect of Abilify, so such use hasn't been approved, but yes, it is possible. Most psychiatric medications have been shown to have an affect on some types of pain. I can't say whether or not it will help your mother, that depends on what is causing her pain, however, there is a chance it could help. Are there any other questions or concerns? ## I think I'm going to mention it to h...

I was on effexor and wellbutrin for depression for many years. It stopped working so the doctor gave me 5mg abilify to take with the wellbutrin instead of the Effexor. The abilify worked very well for depression, but caused anxiety ( which I never had before) I stayed on it for 6 to 8 weeks anyway - dealing with the anxiety because the depression was gone. The anxiety was very very difficult to deal with and finally I couldn't take it anymore and had to stop taking it. I weaned off it and the anxiety went away EXCEPT NOT ALL OF IT. Now I have a new problem that wont go away and I am so scared and frustrated When I go to sleep I have bad dreams or dreams that cause anxiety. I wake up from the dream - still remembering some of it. Than within a second or two I am hit with a wave of an...

I was on 10mg of Abilify for at least 5 years as an add-on to my anti-depressant for my major depressive disorder, on top of my bulimia and anxiety. I went down to 5mg in the last year I was on it. I had no idea it had such bad physical withdrawal effects. My old doctor told me to wean off of it last year when I decided I didn't need it anymore, but did not give me any sort any sort of percentage or schedule. I got terribly sick about a month and a half after I weaned off of it for only 2 weeks and didn't even make the connection right away. So I've been taking 2.5mg every 35-45days for the past year... basically every time I get sick. Now I have terrible joint pain, which I thought was arthritis (I'm only 36 years old) and I just went to an orthopedist and she found no ...

My 13 yr old son has just been prescribed Abilify and I need to know if anyone has experience with their teen being on this. ## My son was on Abilify for about a year. He did really well on it except that he gained almost 50lbs. It helped him focus and concentrate but made hiim extremely hungry to the point that he was getting up in the middle of the night and gorging himself on food. ## My son took Abilify for about 2 years, ages 14-16, was not approved by the FDA for him at the time. He began taking it after an episode of waking me in the middle of the night telling me that satan told him to kill himself. He was blank and lacked emotion while he was taking it (which was reported to the mental health provider), but no weight gain. He truly lost his personality and sense of humor. He ha...

I took abilify after going into the mental hospital for 3 or 4 days. When I got out I took the pills until I noticed shortness of breath, extreme body aches, etc.. but I soon heard voices and depression again. I went back in to the hospital and came out with the shot. I thought I had covid when the side effects came on the first time and stopped. I realized it was the abilify when they returned double time! I was blowing stop lights without any clue. Just mindless. I tripped going up and down steps. I was out of breath and worn out VERY EASILY! I EVEN THOUGHT I WAS HAVING A STROKE several times during the month after injection. When it came time for another shot I said HELL NO!!!! This is where it gets sad! After I turned down the second shot, about a week later I noticed a change. I wa...

My foster child is on Ability 5 mg, Bupropion 75 mg, Chlorpromazine 25mg 3 times per day for bipolar and ADHD. Does he need these meds that seem to do the same thing? I have the sense since he has been with me that he does not have anger problems any more than any other 11 year old child. He did tell me that he used anger to get away from the home he was in because he was being beaten by an older child. I will admit he may be adhd but bipolar you can't make me believe. ## I'd suggest discussing it with his doctor and/or getting a second opinion. It is an unfortunate fact that many children end up over medicated and many doctors don't review what the child is taking and just leave them on them, rather than do a review and see if it is needed any longer. Have you talked to any...

My son safely tapered off Abilify. His last dose was Saturday July 4th. Curious how long the drug remains in his system. And, once it's completely gone from his blood stream, will there be any withdrawal symptoms I need to watch for? He is non verbal, profoundly disabled, otherwise I would ask him if he is feeling any withdrawals. Thanks! ## By now the drug is certainly out of his system, as I know this reply is late from when you last posted. But regarding your concerns on withdrawal symptoms I would try to watch specifically for any signs of depression, irritability, and other mood-related changes of that nature. Tapering the dose down as he did, should've lessened the possibility of any severe withdrawal symptoms. However, because everyone responds to these medications differ...

My son has just been put on Abilify for bipolar - He is 5yrs old... Does anyone have any advice or experience with children on this medication? ## Well, I am not sure how crazy I am about a child that young using it, it has not been evaluated for safety and efficacy in children under 18 yet. Here's the page with the info: Ablify Info Click Here ## My son has been on abilify for a little over a month and has been placed on this med for depression My son has also been diagnosed with add. Thus far its worked great hes no longer withdrawn, he can focus more and attentive and most of all he's happy it seems as though we may not need the add medicine. I feel as though you wont know if a med works until you try it and if we do start seeing side effects then he will have to stop taking ...

Took prozac, cymbalta, and others a they ran their course. Depression better, but not happy with weight gain and tiredness. any other options available now?? Thank You- ## Pretty much all the medications used to treat such conditions can cause weight gain as side effects. Have you discussed the issue with your doctor? The only thing you might be able to do is up your exercise and cut down on your calorie and fat intake. ## Sandy I am also on 2mg. of ability, and 100 mg of pristiq, and am gaining weight, but depression is so much better, and doing more now, talking to people, and ect. I'm taking 10 mg of abilify and have been for 2 years- I would like to come off-think it's an ok decision as things are stable in my life - just not sure how to do it ..I'm also worried about the effects of this drug ## Hello, Abili! How are you? The best thing to do would be to consult your doctor, so they can help you set up a proper tapering schedule. If you just suddenly stop taking it, without tapering, it may cause some withdrawal effects, which the FDA lists as possibly including nausea, fever, chills, diarrhea, rebound depression and rebound anxiety. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I've been taking 10mg of Abilify for about three years. It's combined with lexapro. I've had enough of it as I feel I don't need it anymore. Hi ,i take Cymbalta and Wellbutrin . i would say for the last 2 yrs all they have done for me was keep me from crying all the time, i am still always sad, have to force myself to do anything that i dont have to do. The dr gave me 5mg Abilify a week ago and i still have not taken one because of all the scary side affects .Idont know what to do. Iam so tired of living my life like this but i am to paranoid to try new meds. ## I am so very sorry about what you are going through. What side effects do you find so scary? Maybe we can address those and help you more. In most cases, very few people experience any serious side effects, the only reason you read so much about them on a site like this is due to the fact that the larger percentage of people that are taking it without a problem have n...

I was given Prozac for depression by my PTP but this sent me to the ER on the 4th day. I woke up vomiting, with dizziness, my legs were so weak, I had a cold and hot rush, and the worst head ache. After fluids, morphine, labs and a CT scan I was sent home and was told I had a stomach flu (smh). My psychiatrist said it was a violent reaction to Prozac. He also said my PTP shouldn't have prescribed an anti depressant. I was very paranoid and I've had really low moods followed by extreme energy and insomnia among other things. He prescribed Abilify a few days ago. First day, I had no effects. I was on the edge, paranoid and even had a huge argument with a complete stranger. That night I couldn't sleep, I felt so anxious and my heart felt like it would beat too fast. I was panic...

My mother has Parkinson's (we think) was on Sinimet and Carbadopaleva and they took her off of that and now put her on Abilify and Ultram and now she can't talk suddenly and cries and is suicidal. For 3 years we have felt she's been overdrugged. Her mind is OK until they pump more drugs in her. ## Low Dose Abilify increases dopamine and increases mood. High dose abilify blocks dopamine. It sounds like the doctor needs to reconsider the dose ASAP. See Below: How Abilify works: Burris KD, Molski TF, Xu C, Ryan E, Tottori K, Kikuchi T, Yocca FD, Molinoff PB.

Would the combination of either of these medications cause fainting? I now take 5 mg of Abilify per day. I took my last pill of 100 mg fluconazole on yesterday ; also took a 3.50mg of remeron last night.. This morning I stared the 4mg of cyproheptadine. by the afternoon I fainted. I have not been eating as I should. I am very concerned now. I am now taken off of remeron, but will continue the Abilify and Cyproheptadine. ## Hi, Keanna! Sorry that you fainted. If you haven't been eating properly, that's the culprit you should probably look at first. If you're not eating properly and taking medications, especially the Abilify, which is a very strong one, then it tends to cause more pronounced side effects. Only your doctor can check you over and tell you for sure what has cause...
