Atabrine Availability

I CAN'T FIND A PHARMACY TO FILL A RX FOR ATABRINE. IS IT NOT AVAILABLE ANYMORE? IT WAS SO EFFECTIVE BEFORE WHEN I HAD A LUPUS FLARE.

Atabrine contains the active ingredient Quinacrine and has several different medical uses, including systemic Lupus.

Where are you located? Is this a recent prescription?

As far as I can tell, it is listed as still being available in the U.S.

If it's not commonly used, some pharmacies may not carry it routinely and may have to order it in.

Have they said it was discontinued or that they just don't carry it?

You can get atabrine (quinacrine) at a compounding Pharmacy. I get it from Panorama Compounding Pharmacy in Lake Balboa, CA

I would like to know, what side effects, if any, does Atabrine have? I have been prescribed this medicine for Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis. I can't really find anything about this drug, I know it has to be compounded, but does it work and can it make you sick?

I had ghiardia ( parasites that were in the drinking water) and was treated with Atabrine. I developed toxic psychosis and had to be hospitalized for several days and then it took several months to recover. When I was discharged from the hospital, I still had a lethal dose of arsenic in my body. There is arsenic in Atabrine. I am fortunate that I did not die.

Quinacrine is still available as a compounded prescription as I just picked up my first order yesterday. There are two compounding pharmacies in my area. One said they couldn't get it because their main supplier doesn't carry it. The other one had no problem getting it, so you might have to call around for availability. FYI, the cash price for a 30-day supply was about $45. This was for 60 capsules of 25 mg each, with a recommended starting dose of two capsules a day.
